Mostly the song or band im listening to at that very moment. Maybe a lyric in the song itself.

Occasionally ill run a themed character though, based off me, my family members, close friends or celebrities.

Maybe even a favorite character from another game ive played

Characters from lord of the rings. Or occasionally I'll make a dark elf merchant, hurthling mindcrafter, or other hard-to-survive class, name him after someone I don't like, and laugh pitilessly when he dies.

I especially like:

"Bradley, the male trollish necromancer, choked on his own vomit while paralysed in a dangerous cave near the drakalor pass"

THose of you who have been here awhile (Me, Duke, Iridia, Ekaterin, Jan, Jonesy and a couple of others) will understand this.

Almost always named Pom, as this way it makes it easy to remember which char I'm playing at a given time. The saves overwrite each other, so there's only one save to pick. Also, all pets get named Squishy, followed by SquishyII, SquishyIII etc. Just loved the scene in Finding Nemo - I shall call him Squishy and he shall be my Squishy and he will be mine.

Ninja Bren, if monk
Majin, if assassin
Jack, if i killed a jackal
Tar Tnaig, if giant rat was first
ummmm... i hate pets because they never keep up with your character, but any pet i come across is called Timmy.

I have different names for my different kinds of characters:
High elven paladins: Tiro [numerical prefix] (I seem to get through these guys quite easily. Last one I played was Tiro XXXI :) )
Drakish beastfighters: Alexx (umm, was stuck for inspiration)
Human necromancers: Carenomir (carno is greek/latin? for flesh, kind of appropriate)
Drakish weaponsmiths: Ygrath (sorta Norse-sounding name)

If I get a pet while someone's in the room, I name it after them. Otherwise any random name will do, usually Bob.

I use a random name generator as well. As such, most of my names are very hard to pronounce.

I name them after the first kill. I use the monster memory to check monster descriptions for things like the number of them I've already killed (i.e., just HOW tough is that spider-summoning elf gonna get if I don't use my last potion of invisibility to sneak up and kill her?) so I forgot the identity of the first kill that way often enough to make it worthwhile to name the characters after them.

At level 20 or the completion of the Courage quest, whichever comes first, I name my characters after a character in a book I'm reading.

Most of my chars have kewl names like: dfg, fg, ghj, gh, and something like that... it happens because there are some months that I don't want my chars to born in, and when the unwanted month pops up, I just make a char and quit the game as fast as possible. The "fast as possible" part concerns also the name part, and given examples are the first few buttons I lay my fingers on. If the char is a successful and lucky one; he manages to get to lvl 30 or so, I give him a decent name.

sounds like birth sign scumming to me, hee hee

Edit: I usually create the character race & class after the month so... or if the month is a "good for every class" I sometimes randomize my char. Last randomized char survived to lvl 28 and he was an orcish merchant.
Anyway, I name my chars after the things that pop in my head, like "haes" "tuid" "kajaasf", and stuff. sometimes I just randomly type sumtin.

yeah, I'm a real birthscummer! :D
Well, I just don't like unicorn, falcon or wolf months. TO ME they are good for nothing... Months I like when playing a fighter char: Sword, raven and dragon. When magi: wand, salamander and cup.

I dunno if that month thing really makes a huge difference, but I've become quite obsessive about it..

Try Candle with some fragile race/class and you see how much they really mean...

Yeah, I birthscum to, but not too badly. There's usually 4 signs or so I'm happy with getting with any character type I try to make.

I usually try to make Tolkien-ish-sounding names, or maybe I'll just attach random sounds together until I run out of room. Kurdugilafnequartilfigo, for example. Well, that's too long but you get the idea.

I usually name my character after my first kill.
Before that i name him "-" for he hasn't earned a name yet.
As soon as i don't need to know the first kill anymore (never got that far while using this name system :D) i just look at if he's done some great deed which could earn him a name. :D
I think it just adds a bit of flavour to the game, earning a name :P

And about the birth-scumming, i never do that. I just don't do any kind of scumming (as soon as the game crashes i might chance that just to be able to restore after a crash, but i'm not sure about that). I just thinks it abuses the game and the gaming-experience to scum.
I usually just chance my race and class selection according to the birthsign. Makes sure i play more kinds of chars :D So if i happen to be born a tree i will play mindcrafter.
