After (l)ooking at a dwarf, the message was, "...doesn't care about you..."

I walked past him (dark elf beastfighter, lvl 6), and he attacked me!

I know that my beastfighter didn't land on a squeeking trap thing, so what can I do to avoid being killed by a non-hostile monster?

P.S. I was injured and bleeding at the time...

Did you have the stealth skill ? IIRC either dark elves or beastfighters have it. It could be that the dwarf just hadn't noticed you when you got that "don't care about you" but when you walked past him he did notice you.

Lots of mosters are bipolar like that, and only become hostile when you walk next to them. You can usually count on cats to be like that, and stop being hostile after a little while.
