I have no idea, a wild guess, though, would be that you were in ID and left something truly important behind. But I guess that isn't even close to the thing it really means.

I wasn't. I killed the assassin prince, picked up the dagger, identified it, then got the message. I think what happened was I lost fate smiles, not sure why though.

It seems familiar, fate smiles might have something to do with it. Is it really not in the guidebook?

Couldn't find it either. Weird.

Pretty sure it's when a companion dies. Checking the RGRA says it's "the death of an innocent being". Probably a neutral monster got zapped or something.

The companion dieing(how do you spell that) messages are different depending on your alignment. IIRC chaotics get "You laugh at the death of your companion. You never really liked him anyway." or something like that. Maybe that enormous loss is for lawfuls.

IIRC the messages are also different depending on if the companion dies in your line of sight or not. So there are quite a few alternatives.

If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

Darned. I'm quite sure that I've seen that message when wasting some scroll, but I just can't remember what scroll... It's not scroll of identify when all your stuff is already identified... Maybe a scroll of item destruction, when you've got nothing but artifacts?

Alex, did you use scroll to ID the dagger? Did you read any other scrolls??

Ahhhh, jomppa solved it - I remember having a blessed scroll of ill fate in my inventory towards the end of my game, and I just checked my .flg and it wasn't there. I must have accidentally read it. without noticing. somehow.

Also if you read a Scroll of identify, and chose not to identify anything..

though it might be "great loss" then.. not sure.
