i just closed the gate with a grey elf fighter. i didn't have a single artifact generated that wasn't supposed to be there. then, the truly excited vault gave me 3 piles of crap, RoRes, whirlwind, and RoI (i had fire immun from crowning and other items to not need it) the casino didn't have squat, no 7lgers (none in the whole game even), no GoGS, no Aols. even teh rings of slaying were only +4. i got Grod's morning star as my crowning gift. i used it for a while, and even though the thought of smashing skulls with a massive ball and chain is very appealing to me i gave it up for shield and sword of devastation. i found the sword in darkforge, i've always used spears in the past but the sword served me well. as a mercy gift, i suppose, the gods saw fit to give me BoW for the uselesness gift. pretty awesome. i had over 80 aluria antidote for d:50 but needed only two. the bracers plus my other regen equip was enough to keep me maxed health. figthers are a damn good class though, even with the crappy lvl 50 skill. goin play another one. i stayed on berserk basically the whole game and was still able to melee just about anything. i took out a doppleganger king at lvl 22 with two hits. although a berserker emperor took me below 100 a few minutes later. since i usually play wizards i had teh chance to admire what demon slaying ammo can do to a vault of greater molochs (just outside the entrance to the truly excited vault of giants too!) took me from lvl 31 to 40. thank goodness i was smart enough to learn teleport. btw, i found out that you can generate the puppy tehn leave the level if you're not strong enough and it'll still be alive later on. might help someone to save it. oh, does anyone know if only smith can melt items into ingots? how else can one get ingots if you're not a smith? after i learned smithing in dwarftown the guy woudn't do any more smithing for me. kinda weird i guess he figures i can do it on my own. |

The dwarven smith can repair broken stuff and remove rust from rusted stuff, but he will take a good price for his work. Oh yeah, WTF? RoResistance crap? Please notify me of a better armour, s'il vous plait. If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away. i know about mining, but only dwarves and gnomes get it to my knowledge. at least i know elves don't. but even with mining only smiths can melt items into ingots with th elvl 6 class skil. my question is whether or not characters who have smithing (ie learning it from dwarftown) but aren't weaponsmiths can make ingots. does anyone know? |

Orcs get mining. Orcs make good weaponsmiths in my opinion. What do you wish for? wands of cat repellent_ |

Natures companion(?) is better than RoRes, RoRes only give resistances and a bit of toughness, Natures Companion(?) gives speed and immunities Sponges are Scary... |

Wow, I can cross pretty much all topics here. I've been playing gnomish weaponsmiths now, gnomish because I think mining and gemology are appropriate for weaponsmiths, and I was precrowned with Nature's Companion. NC is a good thing to be precrowned with, it gets the two (in my opinion, I don't want to start arguments) most important immunities out of the way instantly. And only weaponsmiths can melt items besides ore. I've only tried it once so far, though, and it evaporated the addy warhammer I tried it on. |

morio i don't think you're quite getting the message. of course you have to 'a'pply smithing to a piece of ore to get an ingot. the question isn't a matter of how to use smithing, it's if characters besides smiths can make ingots. regardless of how many ores or items i have in my inventory i can't melt them into ingots w/o the weaponsmith class ability. i know non-smiths who learn smithing can remove rust, i've done that. i want to know if non smiths can melt items or ore into ingots to do smithing with. or if they can get someone else to do it. but the thing is that once glod teaches you smithing he gives some message whenver you talk to him after that and doesn't offer to smith for you anymore. about RoRes, artifact armor is great cause it don't get damaged. just not what i want to see for my fighter in the truly excited vault. especially when the RoI is there with it. |

j, saying please twice is a little redundant don't you think? besides, how could you forget about natures companion? |

I've found RoR twice and didn't use it in either game. It's often useless - by the time you find it you have those resistances already and there are better things to wear. |

Maestro_Mozart, you said "morio i don't think you're quite getting the message. of course you have to 'a'pply smithing to a piece of ore to get an ingot. the question isn't a matter of how to use smithing, it's if characters besides smiths can make ingots. regardless of how many ores or items i have in my inventory i can't melt them into ingots w/o the weaponsmith class ability. i know non-smiths who learn smithing can remove rust, i've done that. i want to know if non smiths can melt items or ore into ingots to do smithing with." 'a'pplying smithing on a piece of ore is the only way I know to melt them into ingots. And it have worked for me!!! Non-smiths can melt ore into ingots. |

ok i gotcha now, ores can be forged into ingots. still can't melt itmes though, guess that's one of the bonuses of being a smith. it'll take a lot of work to make big improvements on armor pieces, but a little bonus is better than none i guess. i guess i'll just have to repair my pickaxe whenever it breaks. i wish the dwarven pickaxe was guaranteed somewhere in the game. |

jeez, now i can't repair my pickaxe |

Then go get it repaired by the dwarven smith. Oh yeah, if you go whack some jellies with it and get it to corrode to some -5 or -6 modifiers, it'll be cheaper to get it fixed. If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.
