^o^ ... all of my winning chars are hurthling bards !!! (yep me boring XD) ... First choose a race that can grant you 3 talents to get 7LB as heir gift. Go to teriyo to get puppy quest, then go to puppy cave second level to tame ants (trigger more ants to come out first) such that they can mine a lot of rocks for you. Get the rocks, head to outlaw town to get pickpocketing (if you're neutral or chaotic) and then do the carpenter quest or go to HMV via small cave (because 7LB + enough ammos means you can beat almost everything). After carpenter quest you should still have time to save puppy, so try save it. Then the usual: Coc, dwarven quests, Pyramid, Skeleton King, learn all skills available ... Can try first few levels of TOEF at lvl 20 (if there's ring of ice) or collect spellbooks/stat potions in ID. Once you get a phase dagger or penetrating weapon clear the forge. Get crowned early if you're not doing ultra. Library is recommended before the final descent. Most critical tips: 1. Calm all cats and summoned animals. 2. Kill necromancers as quick as possible. (Run next to them and WHACK) Don't let them summon ANYTHING!!! and oh ... seems i just play bards like ordinary spell-casting fighters ^^|| ... anybody is playing it differently? Wow, I think I may just try a hurthling bard and use this guide, see how it works out, maybe make a few changes. "I concur that we are both atheists. I just believe in one less god than you do. When you come to realize why you dismiss all the other possible gods out there, you will know why I dismiss yours. |

Ah ... one more hint for hurthling bard at early lvls: Anything in your pack (esp tools) can be used as ammos: cookery kits, torch, flints, etc etc. (except coins) Sometimes you may get "exactly hit" ^o^ ... so don't worry even if you don't have rocks [Edited 1 time, last edit on 5/14/2004 at 14:06 (GMT -5) by illumi] |

Hurthlings and Gnomes would get the same on average...Well actually i think Gnomes get a little more mana so they might get an extra from that.. But then you dont get the nice thrown rocks skill :P |

And not get the penalty for wearing leg wear.. |

umm ... i've made a calculation based on race + occupation + skill learnable during the game which shows hurthling bards possess the most number of skills among all races in the same profession. And globally speaking, gnome farmer has an advantage. (34 skills available !!!) The foot wear penalty is no problem as long as one has 7LB ... (what? you wanna be faster than that?) But i think there are better strategies for bards apart from relying on the said boot ... (esp before the Talent system ever exists) How to raise awesome pets, for example? How to raise awesome pets: don't. You don't get exp for stuff they kill, and then if you manage to get them angry by stepping on a fireball trap or something like that they'll kill you. If you really want to, go tame a killer bug at the bug place. Train it and it'll kill everything in a turn. Giant boars are also good, they're found in the wilderness at some point, but you have to have some levels, they don't show up at levels 1-10 at least. If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away. yeah.. don't count on pets, at some point they will turn on you if you don't play extremely careful.. and playing extremely careful means, never kicking down locked doors, always checking the next square for traps etc. pets suck, all they do is kill you. |

I don't know how other people train bards, but I find them really hard to keep alive. What I do to get around this problem is to go to outlaw village, make first kill, then head off to the ID and stay there till lvl 8 or so. |

hmm ... another approach for bards 1. Tame ant warriors to protect you (puppy cave is the safest place for bards) 2. Train music to 100 3. And then go to bug temple to get killer bugs How does it sound? |

playing bards depends 100% what skills you get. i've never kept a pet with a bard if i have 7lbs. it's just no fun and companions are a big pain in the arse to command all the time. it's boring enough to train weapons of returning and that's considering catching them half the time. all you have to do with a bard is have detect item status. with this skill you can find the good items in the ID that have + to PV. wield a spear and shield for DV. a DV/PV of 30/15 at lvls 8-15 you will be virtually untouchable. this is very easy to achieve with detect item status. otherwise you'll have to bring what you can carry to an altar. last game i played (beat andy) i didn't find a girdle of carrying till the casino, i know it's unbelieveable. so detect item status was crucial. if you have gemology, metallurgy, or mining you'll be in good shape with smithing. however if you don't all you have to do is tame the ants on PC:2, i think the ants gain your gemology bonus. just one level provided me enough ore to have a DV of 60 with smithing at only 80. with 60 DV even nuurag and barney, and andy couldn't hurt me in melee. bards, archers, and wizards are by far the most powerful class. it's almost too easy. every bard level bonus skill is extremely useful and if you're lucky you can get grand mastery with it and the golden gladius before level 35. just hold onto the gladius until you're lvl 13 or 14 with spears (the preffered weapon) if you survive the beggining of the game the only thing that will be able to kill you is yourself. |

*coughs*Doppleganger Kings, Doppleganger Kings*coughs* hehe Though you always have the ability to change your tactics, so you still have the advantage. People stabbed in the face don't talk much Mostly they just gurgle And bleed -Black Mage |

Right. Don't rely on your pets too much; because sooner or later you're gonna have to face the problem yourself. Andy would be one. But then again, the strong point of a bard IS his ability to tame pets. So the best strategy for a bard would probably be to train your pets AND yourself. Keep your pets at a minimum too, so they won't steal all that valuable EXP from you. Evil little things... Amusement spread across his sultry lips as a feminine hand touched his. "What?" A faint voice trailed along the wind and whispered into his ears, drops of sweat dripping down to the soil followed by heavy breathing and panting. "Nothing. I just like the way you taste." "Hey," a female voice interrupted. "Stop talking to that glass of orange juice. You're freaking me out." |

Isn't there a suggestion to let the PC share exp. with companions at the ADOM website? |

If thats implemented it should only be available to Bards. And heavily reduced at that |

Just thought and used another good bard strategy. Bring that uber powerful killer bug of yours to the graveyard, start digging up those graves, and laugh manically as your killer bug kills those emperor liches... its nice to have teleport too... damn me forgot to relearn teleport after i finished casting it... cost me 3 learning and 1 charisma i think b4 i got away. |

You can use your killer bugs to kill shopkeepers too... going to get one to attempt to kill the casino guy i think... should be fun... and a general thing about pets.. you can use them to get u farmers corpses without terinyo going hostile to you... now... i wonder whether i should go to the library or get my pet to kill nurag vaarn first. I am lvl 32 now... killed blup's mom, going to tackle the master cat with my wands of paralysation. Been crowned lawful with sun's messenger, got the medal of chaos too... so what should i do? |
