I have a High Elf wizard who I want to develop into an archmage. I have done everything except close the chaos gate. Health is around 900. Mana (with TotRR and Orb of Mana) is around 1400. I have already calculated, using backup file trial runs, that I will need approximately 4500 PPs to cast wish from the book. If I include my health in the equation, I need approximately another 1300 PPs (1 HP = 2 PPs). If I don’t include my health then I need approximately another 3100 PPs.

I have been scumming the blue dragon caves for wands without much success. The ratio of corruption to wands scummed is not great and if I persist with this strategy death by chaos spawning seems inevitable. I can think of two other strategies: (1) use petrification to create statues and then kick them to find wands (low wand yield probability – guidebook suggests approximately 10% chance of finding a wand in a neutral statue). (2) build up insane amounts of money at the casino and keep buying out the two wand shops that I was lucky enough to have generated (approximately 100 000 – 200 000 gold per buyout).

What do you guys think? Persist with archmage or throw in the towel and whoop Andor’s chaotic butt?

the wandshops would be my best bet, and scum the casino too for itamz you might want to have.. like wishes and potions of mana (if not 99 thatis) and other useful stuff..

Close the damned chaos gate first though

You NEED to close the gate in order to get an archmage, so why don't you do it right away and get rid of the corruption.
Also, a wizard is considered an Archmage only if he can book-cast Wish from pp alone (optionally - with base Mana at 1).

Scumming the ID levels 1-9 could be an option. AFAIK there is no background corruption (don't know about post-90 day situation). It is going to take a long time, though.

I can't close the chaos gate yet - I need the Orb of Mana to help me re-charge my PP after each wish and keep my Mana at 99 as the rest of my stats drop to 1.

The corruption in the BDC can be slowed or stopped with blessed scrolls of peace. 3 to 6 should to it for the BDC 3 or 4.

The corruption in the Casino and the wand shops can also be stopped. Helpful for restocks and \destruction kick-theft.

You have all the luck needed for an Archmage, but a true Archmage is a test of patience.

Recent reports show that prayer is also an effective way to recharge the PP necessary to bookcast Wish. A single prayer at very close costs about $50,000 au.

Hmmmm. Hadn't thought about prayer as an alternative. But what if Mana drops to 1 before I build up enough PP to bookcast wish even when Mana is at 1? I know Gottfried used Orb of Mana to re-charge PP while increasing max PP and Mana. Has anyone successfully used prayer instead?

Enough power points to cast Wish from book. That's about 4500 pp.
After you get that, you can get every skill in the game to 100 (except for Alertness and Healing), all stats to 99, and pretty much everything you want.
The point of this challange game is to make a mage with infinite wishes, close the gate, and leave the Drakalor Chain.

Wizards start with healing though, and alertness can be gotten with pots of education.

Yeah, forgot about that.
So you can eventually get every skill up to 100... if you have the patiance to wish for enough Potions/Scrolls of Educationa to get Alertness.

From past experience with a WoW gazillion charges, it doesn't take too long, even on the unlucky days.

You still have to wait for Power Points to recharge, ~4800 PPs don't exactly replanish in one turn ;)

After some careful thought I think I am going to close the gate to end corruption and then scum the BDC and the two wand shops for PP-boosting wands. Buying out a wand shop costs approximately 150 000 – 250 000 gold and yields around 30 – 40 wands. However, with the casino, gold is no problem. Gambling 500 000 gold on a 22 machine takes about an hour – and pays out around 12 million.

Does anyone know if a shop can become permanently depleted? That is my only concern. Provided they are guaranteed to re-stock I am pretty much guaranteed archmage status unless I do something stupid (like forget to cast SoA while carrying 12 million gold!)

My plan is to find/buy enough wands to boost my PP up to 6000+ (its gonna take 1000s of wands). Then transport millions of gold to a co-aligned altar (probably in dwarftown) and book-cast wish on silvernight while wishing for power. All stats should quickly drop to 1. I will pray to quickly re-charge PP and sac gold when I start running out of piety.

Wish me luck – or, rather, tons of patience!

Some interesting things I have noticed in my archmage crusade while experimenting with backups.

No matter how much gold I sacced prior to being crowned, I couldn't get pre-crowned (even when extremely close). I don't whether this is due to being at level 50.

After getting crowned, it was impossible for me to get post-crowned. I sacced 10 million gold and stayed at very close - praying at very close after saccing ten million gold just resulted in an unheard prayer.

Anyone know what is going on? I was kind of hoping to sac obscene amounts of gold and get enough pre-/post-crownings to get every artifact in the game :-(

Another interesting (and amusing!) experience while experimenting with backups. Used scroll of familiar summoning to get a gremlin companion. Entered the underwater cavern . . . the results are pretty funny!

Gozer: pre & post-crownings are level dependent. Specifically, your level needs to be equal to 8+(3 times n) where n is the number of artifacts already generated.

I thought pre-/post-crowning was still possible upon reaching level 50 even if numerous artifacts had been generated. Obviously not.

I notice that the requirements to qualify as an archmage don't include "he must be a wizard". Somebody should make a paladin-archmage or something.

But paladin "arch mage" can`t cast wish from book for 4500 PP... for paladin wish will be 40% more expensive than for wizard...

RGRA recently had a posting of a troll barbarian archmage. Don't know if that one is fabricated or real but supposing it is real that's quite an achievement. Even more amazing might be a mindcrafter archmage seeing that mindcrafters are completely useless at learning spells from books.

Supposing a mindcrafter could book-cast spells after learning them from potions/wands of wonder it might be possible. Otherwise, no chance.

I think the ultimate ADOM challenge could be making each of these:

1. Normal victory with every race/class combo
2. Chaos god ending with every race/class combo
3. ULE/UNE/UCE with every race/class combo
4. Archmage ending with every race/class combo

Back to topic:

Gozer: if you'd like to get more artifacts you could try scumming the BDC. Artifacts are generated there every now and then. At least my archmage-attempt got lost of artifacts that way.

How about eternium man with every race/class combo?

BTW, I'd like to see someone doing 200 archmages. I'd have just one thing to say to that guy: "Get a life."
