I've had more then 1 problem with running Warlords 2 Deluxe:
1) It needs to have a slow CPU ( but that's not much of a problem for me, I can make a back-up computer from the spare parts my dad keeps in his closet.)
2)It says "not enough RAM" (gee, I didn't think it needs more then 512 MB... Or maybe it's that it dedects anything over 32 as negative numbers? :( ).
That too can be overcome by removing the extra RAM.

But after that, why would you bother with Win XP, it won't run anyway?

Yes it is, but what I'm saying is, that Warlords 2 Deluxe CANNOT run on a computer that can run Win XP. The game code is really old and it won't allow you to run with too much RAM. And that "too much" is below the minimum for Win XP :(

wasn't that the game with VERY crude in-between-videos? I mean the ones with the evils omething in a rubber-skull-shaped helmet?
good game, once the videos were removed.
dunno about the deluxe, but are we talking about the red orb entertainment game (that's what I think it was) with pegasi, dragons, undead beasts, knights and stuff. the goal was to destroy the undead and other evils, led by lord bane...? great game, great times.. *sigh*

No, THAT was Warlords 3.
Warlords 2 deluxe had no videos, no campain, just single scenarios. And an infinite number of types of units too.

A lot of old games are very picky about the type of memory (in particular base memory of wich 640K is the max).

Fiddeling with the memory settings on your favourite emulator or XP's "DOS" settings can get most things up and running though...

Programs that use peculiar CPU calls and screen modes are a problem though.

@: Have you tried a slightly older version of DosBox? The very latest version had a bunch of new stuff added wich also added more bugs (like Starcontroll 2 worked ok in 0.58 (colors tend to go all crazy after a while though), but once I upgraded to 0.61 it wouldn't work anymore)...

I managed to get Betrayal at Krondor to work on my computer, so XP is fine by me. I wish I could say the same for Tie Fighter, though.

How different is it from the "regular" Warlords 2? Because WL2 seems to run fine on my DOSBox (just have to disable the voice otherwise it hangs when the helmet dude says "Greetings Warlord" at the start for some reason):

Ok, so it's a totaly different animal then (in terms of requirements anyway).

Betrayal of Kondor... HAven't played it that much, but there is a huge map you can travel around and pick up varous quests or clean out any dungeon you stumble upon and such... The plot might be relatively linear though, never realy made it to the first checkpoint of the main plot myself, just wantered about for a while killing random assassins and then I ended up exploring some dwarf mines or someting and that's about as far as I've made it :P

Character development is very linear and plot driven though, you are stuck with the character(s) the game give you.
