Hmmmm. I'm tired. Thought I'd let the world know that I'm around half way through the coding for the item system on my game.

If you care, you probably shouldn't ;)

Looks better having it posted here. Concrete. I should probably go answer some adom questions to make up for taking up free space.

No site. Screenshots are easy enough, but I don't have any :) mainly because I don't think they prove anything, and I'm vaguely wary that I might be giving away secrets.

I don't need beta testers at the moment, because I'm still coding the various main engines, item, combat, levels, and can find the bugs myself (I hope). I will definitely need beta testers in a few months time, when I start building actual playable territory.

And the reason no-one knows about this game is because, as wary as I am about giving away secrets, I am even more wary of making promises. Saying "My game is going to have x" when the code isn't yet in place is a VERY bad idea.

In fact, come to think about it, saying "My game has x" is also a bad idea. I'd rather just show the finished product.

Very well, but I am not going to tell you anythig that is speculation on my part. I hate making promises if I do not know I can keep them.

Its big, as in a sphere shaped world. Its classic swords and sorcery heroic fantasy, because thats what I want. Your actions influence the world around you. Structures and people are variable, with their own set of internal stats. Ie, you can both build and destroy structures. And they will STAY built or destroyed.

How can I sum it up? I see myself as a game designer, not a programmer.

I'm ALSO a programmer, before you get worried.

But the point is, the emphasis in any game I decide to make is going to be on how classy it feels to play.

If it helps, I am influenced by such games as diablo 1 and 2, adom, daggerfall, ultima underworld, the black isle series such as baldurs gate and icewind dale, final fantasy 5,6, 7 and 9, nethack, secret of mana, shining force..

The game itself isn't a true roguelike, but rather "interactive fiction". You read a description of the area you are in and what you can perceive in it, then make a choice - similar to a fighting fantasy gamebook.

Similar in the same way that an inhabited planet is like a larger and more complex version of a meteorite. The choices you make are based on many variables. You can light up areas with a torch. You can be smarter, or more skilled in a certain area such as climbing a cliff face, or reading runes, or being aware of an ambush in waiting. Even simple things like holding a light source influence what the engine will allow you to do.

The combat system is the black ops area right now, top secret. But I guarantee. I guarantee. It will knock your socks off. No-one has ever done a combat engine like this one.

Did you play it on snes? SOM2 wasn't released on PAL or NTSC outside of asia, but you can get translated versions as emulator roms on the net. SOM2 is way way more beatiful graphically, though the gameplay is a little different - it's 3 person party based with near real time combat, kind of like SOM meets The Legend of Zelda series. The cool thing is, you can have AI control two allies or two human and AI or three human players, and you can switch and swap between characters instantaeneously.

Sounds a lot like the later ultima games with that combat thing.

I first played SOM on snes, then later on emulator. I have no idea where I could find SOM2 on emulator, since I have never even heard of it before now ;) I'm somewhat.. sheltered.. when it comes to emulators, and even more so when it comes to imports.

If you want to try a SOM2 rom you could probably better find it under its foreign name, Seiken Densetsu 3. SOM was SD2, I think that SD1 may have been a gameboy game though not quite sure. I could probably upload the rom if you want it, think I got it on a rom cd somewhere.

Probably too big. I don't have internet access on my home computer, and my internet computer only has 3 1/2 1.44 meg disk drive access. Thus, any game I download for my own use cannot have a zipped file size bigger than about 1.3 megs :)

You can go to www.romnation.net for all your emulation needs (for every system [Almost]). If you go to romnation though, I must warn you, there is some anime porn on the site, nothing too serious.

Luckily for you zipped roms are pretty tiny and could fit on a disk (I think...). But anyway I would feel pretty slack if heaps of people started exploiting roms when there are a lot of legal issues involved, so I'll drop this subject.
