Okay. I AM kinda newbie, with only a lv.15 high elven paladin in infinite caves, but i have a blessed helm of water breathing. I equip it but everytime i press "m" nothing happens. Wtf!

You only need to wear it to gain the effect. You don't need to press anything. If you have on, then feel free to dive in water...just make sure you don't carry unprotected gear like scrolls and books if you have no waterproof blanket. Also, iron items rust quite easily.

Oh! I see. So no water breathing like when you eat Blup, the baby water dragon? That sux. So the HoWB lets you swim so you don't drown... interesting...

Well, with the helm, you don't actually swim. You just walk in the water, so I doubt it trains swimming. At least I recall not having any swimming mssgs when using the helm.

I don't recall seeing this anywhere (might be me not really looking) but underwater it takes 1500 energy to move. I wonder what it's like with the stiff upper lip corruption...

"Stiff muscles". Unless that was a joke, in which case I don't get it...

Chances are it takes 1.5 times your base energy cost, which is higher with stiff muscles.

Eating Blup's corpse also just gives you the ability to breath under water. There's no way to get a water breath attack if that's what you were thinking, sorry.
