I don't know any other game where you can get so many highs and lows in really short succession... the best example could be my last attempt with a Hurthling Farmer.

I've been playing this combo exclusively for some time now without getting very far with any of them... last 10 didn't make to the dwarven village. So here's the roll:
Star sign: Dragon (nice - extra St, To, 10% less marks to advance, extra benefits from tactics - should help a little at start...)
[YOUR HISTORY:
Your father is a guildmaster. Your family generally is rather wealthy and well-known in your home town.
As a child you lived through happy days. Your parents tried to ease your life as much as possible and gave you a lot of comfort.
In your youth you became seriously ill and suffered for many years. When your disease finally was cured you were left weakened, both physically and spiritually, and bereft of the joys of youth.
Your young adulthood was characterized by hard and long work. You had decided to study under a renowned master. To your great disappointment you had to find out, that he was a hard, unjust and tyrannic man, embittered by his old age. Your apprentice years were quite terrible.
You decided to become a Farmer.]
Note the awful background... this char started with abysmal stats: St 10, Le 8, Wi 6, Dx 15, To 12, Ch 10, Ap 8, Ma 3, Pe 10.

Part One: "the early game"
Found a spear early in the VD, but wait... 1d8-2 to damage with Normal tactics. Great... this char started with a cursed ring of damage.
Nice... a tower shield [+7, +3] on VD3. I equip it and start to think this will help me getting far this time... and a few steps later an acid
trap destroys it. Damn...
Altar on VD5... chaotic. No big deal... one monster sacced and it's neutral, two monsters sacced and - damn - *WELCOME BELIEVER*... wanted
to stay lawful.
Got healing from the carpenter quest... time now to get precrowned with maybe a nice item. First monster sacced and... *TAKE THIS FOR YOUR IMPUNITY*... great - quest turned me LN without me noticing it, and now all my stuff is cursed. At least the next monster turned the altar
lawful and I can work on piety again... only to get precrowned with the damn Black Tome!
(BTW, it's the third time in a row Shalla rewards my hurthling farmers with that crappy tome!)
Now most important stuff is to get holy water quick to uncurse all that junk, in particular the
cursed ring of damage. Wandering around at very aggressive (oh yeah I equipped a shield too with the spear so now I get another extra -2 to dam) doing 1d8+0 isn't very good, and I don't have massive supplies of rocks to kill stuff.
Ok, no time to lose, time to go to the CoC... scroll shop on D4 and I have now scrolls of identify and uncursing (did I mention that this char started with 8 Le... so illiterate?), potion shop on D5 - great, a few potions of water - and... a beehive and a threatening room full of displacer beasts - not so great. And I have 5 rocks left...
Clearing that level was a long struggle, almost died many times, but finally the char manages to reach the dwarven city. First thing to get - literacy. "I want ye to slay a ghost lord to prove
your valor."
That's it... the dwarven elder gave the final blow. My char grabs a dagger in his inventory and prepares for suicide...

Part Two: "you feel your luck is turning"
At the last moment he changes his mind... this is really bad, it cannot become worse... first time in ages a hurthling farmer reaches Dwarftown.
So he grabs his potions of water, blesses them, then dip the cursed weapon, ring and gloves into them. Now the ring of damage is blessed... 1d8+14 with normal tactics.
A quick trip to the surface reveals a pair of SLBs in the the previously skipped black market shop... and the char has the 5000 gold to buy them.
After scumming a looong time the early CoC for a ghost lord, it appears that the char won't be able to get literacy... before maybe D50. Well... stairs down from Dwarftown to D11 - "you feel excited"... opening the vault and what is the first monster that comes in line of sight? a ghost lord! Isn't that amazing?
With literacy it's now easy to identify and uncurse all the items in the inventory... a PoCC, SoCR, PoGA, few stat pots, mithril spear, tower shield... and of course uncursed herb seeds. D9 is quickly transformed into a big field and stats improved with herbs.
Now to the second quest... Usually (well almost exclusively) I decide to take the risk and go down through DH1 and DH2, but this time, as soon as I take the stairs down, I am welcomed by a *THUMB* sound: a greater moloch 3 spaces away! Retreat...
So it will be the forest this time... been a while. However, as soon as I enter the forest, I feel a surge of power! A named grizzly bear is standing next to me. I go up and discard the artifact guardian with rocks. Then I go down again to see what artifact was generated... shiny silver bracers... bloody hell, the bracers of war!! Without that greater moloch generated in the dwarven halls I wouldn't have prolly visited the forest... Now the char has a DV of 60+ and a PV of almost 30.

Part Three: TBC...
As it is going, expect here a great victory or a really gruesome death...

Yep! Tell us about your bloody death when it happens!

(My own last character was precrowned with the Robes of Resistance, then crowned with Aylas Holy Scarf... his doom was almost immediate!)

Sorry, the char is still alive :)
Real life doesn't let me play as much as I want, so it's getting slowly. Managed to complete all the dwarven quests and cleared the dwarven graveyard. On the way I did the pyramid too (RNG took revenge here... acid trap destroyed my waterproof blanket and the following water trap destroyed my BB manual as well as a bunch of useful scrolls, among them a SoCR).
Oh, I picked up a RoDS somewhere :) so I even saved Khelly, though I don't plan to try any ultra ending. Next step will be getting crowned... then straight dive to the wall of flames.

Ok now I am *REALLY* pissed...
This char was doing too good... now it is gone. I knew I should have made a backup of the game on D30... signal 291 raised upon entering the casino. Nothing to do to prevent that :(

Signal 291? Is it a bug of some sort that " deleted " your char?

Btw, you're a truly ADOM player to survive so long with a hurtling farmer! I tried that couple of times and survived to level 8... Not too good.

That lvl 6 class power becomes quite useful for hurthling, doesn't it?

Singnal 291 is the bane of all players, the unaviodable error that crashes the game and makes your char absolete (it involves too much items of somthing, but I've gotten it in an almost empty dungeon once...).

An optimist sees a light at the end of that tunnel.
A realist sees a train.
And the train driver sees three idiots on the tracks.

Yeah I bet something wrong was generated in the casino shop... and yeah I'm pissed cos it's the first hurthling farmer that passes the ToEF after maybe 50 tries :(
