Ettins rarely spawn, your best chance is look everywhere. BTW, I don't think I have seen ettins in the big room. The UD, yeah. The RotHK dungeon, sure, but not in the big room.
Anvils:
- Option A, lead the quest greater demon to the dwarven smith, have him killed, pick up the anvil, enjoy the now free forge. Or...
- Option B, Go to Dark Forge, and try to kill Kherabwhatshisname the chaotic smith.
- Option C, walk around randomly and kill stuff in hopes somthing will drop it. You've got more chance of finding yourself a RoDS and wish for it, while your doing option C ;)

I usually kill Kherab for an anvil. It's pretty hard though, he's one tough bugger.

Maelstrom you will not believe this, just made a dwarf paladin, unicorn, long lost brother. Got to UD:8, and in what must be the 6th tension room so far, an orc scorcher (I think) dropped - of all things - an anvil. How messed up is that. Never had a RoDS dropped. Got a s/shot of the message log.
Tell me how to get stronger....

When I played a weaponsmith I stashed my anvil somewhere right at the beginning (in VD:1 or something) and only returned to get it when I had found a forge somewhere. after that I left it (and my leather apron and warhammer) by the forge).

It supposedly decreases the chances to fail, but it hasn't been tested.

An outlaw in UC:3 dropped an anvil... I left it there because I had no use for it, but I could probably go back and find it there if I wanted it.

What do you do with an anvil? Smithing is all but useless. Artifacts cannot be improved and usually one finds lots of scrolls of damage/hit increasing.

Smithing rocks. The difference between a well smithed/not smithed character by the time they reach D:50 is about 20-30 points of DV and PV. That's a lot. Don't forget that you can improve more than just weapons and armour - helms, shields, bracers, boots, even some rings.

I played as a dwarven smith, started with an anvil got the garanteedGlod anvil and found one on CoC 16 or so. Melted the 3rd one down for a cool 8 ingots.
Smithed my crown of fire from [+1, +2] to [+8, +8]. I'm also working on my shield now :) up to [+13, +7] don't think it'll go much higher though
