I've found a few scrolls of education and one potion of education on my 24 Human Fighter, and each time I used one (blessed, of course) I would only advance a little in a skill I already knew. Last night, the "Detect Traps" skill was advanced by 1 to 100 by a blessed SoE, which almost made me throw my monitor out the window. What exactly are they for? I thought there was a chance of learning a new skill...

the PoE and SoE trains an existing skill or grants a new one.

You're just unlucky, because I stole all your luck ;P No, really, I did!
For me, PoE and SoE always give new skills... it's so much better to have Necromancy or Gardening, then increase you usefull skills, isn't it? Well... maybe not... maybe we're both just unlucky... Yeah, that's it. It seems to work for everybody, just blame your RNG.

Maastonakki: they are multiwishable (?) but my Archmage preferred wishing for "magical writing sets" and writing them. SoE is not that hard to write (for a wiz at least) and one can get some 10 scrolls worth of writing sets easily. And those MWS's can also be used for other scrolls.

It wasn't lucky. Detect Traps would advance itself quite often by 3-4 points, and moreso if I recently detected a trap. When I used the PoE, Detect Traps was already at 99.

mental note: never drink PoE if one has skills that will soon rise to 100 on their own accord. ;-)
