First of all, I'm new to this forum, so please excuse me if I break any rules by mistake ;(

Anyhow, I've beaten ADOM twice now, both "normal" endings. The good news is that the game has become my favorite RPG, on any platform. I've played tabletop D&D, computer RPGs, and console RPGs, and none of them come close. Well, some of them do, but none are as satisfying.

The bad news: I can't play any other RPG now without getting bored. With ADOM and JADE development seemingly arrested, I'm getting desperate for my next fix.

So: are there any alternatives to ADOM out there? I played Nethack before ADOM, and it doesn't even compare. I tried ZAngband, which was fun for a while. It had the customizability that Adom didn't, but I lost interest because of the randomly generated levels. Morrowind (and its predecessor) serve as pale substitutes, but their lack of permadeath makes them boring.

I've heard of Avanor, and Tome, and Gearhead. Gearhead seems to be the most promising, and I'll try it out this weekend. It has a lot of what appealed to me in ADOM: skills, quests, detailed character creation, and useful NPCs. It took me hours of digging through forum threads to find out about it, though.

To conclude, are there any other games like ADOM and Gearhead out there?

Adom is a unique game, not very many games have its lvl. of depth. Since you find nethack boring I wouldn't suggest Slash'em (a little better) There's omega and exile (omega doesn't have races though). You could try http://www.the-underdogs.org/ to find some freeware. There's diablo, everquest, whatever kind-of new game if you haven't tried that.

Check my page
http://monsite.wanadoo.fr/powerwyrm/
You'll get some info how to get a copy of my (still under development) roguelike game RTBand.
It's a mix of adom, tome and eye of the beholder.
TomeNET is really nice, I play that a lot. But it has random levels like 99% of angband variants...
The Great Wyrm of Order breathes light (more) - wow, you feel very smart!

Avanor is still in it's early stages of developement and is full of a crapload of dumb bugs that crash the game when you are far and crash it every time you load the game after that and piss you off and make you post it in the ADOM forums, FYI.

Well, that felt good :)

I used to mud like mad. My mud of choice was Dragonrealms. I stopped when they started charging for it. My main problem with muds is, they make you do irritatingly repetitive things to build up skills so you spend more time online and spend more money.

Roguelikes all the way, please.

Lack of permanent deaths?
You really-really should try Wizardry 8.
It's *very* good, yet somehow not very popular. Has a 'save and exit' mode for maniacs. Has a wide flexibility for party generation - 6 slots for strarting chars, and you might pick just one(!) instead of all 6, multiclassing, good stat/skill system, no overpower classes, extremely good monster system - they go up in levels as party does, etc., etc.

Wizardry 8.

I played Wizardry 7 and 8 before I tried Adom. They were all right...though 7 required rolling characters for DECADES before you got one you wanted.

Thing about Wizardry is it's got massive slowdown on this comp for some reason, especially near foliage. Got so frustrating I stopped playing.

Good suggestion though =O) Keep them coming in!

Lost Labyrinth:
http://laby.toybox.de/index.php3?sprache=1

Its a kind of 'alternative' coffe break-style roguelike. It has graphics and the author upgrades it a lot and implements lot of stuff people are asking for. It gets better with each version. Try it.

Challenge Games!!

Check 'em out on rgra--there's everything from winning the game without killing anything to winning the game while still illiterate to getting to level 50 in the Small Cave! (The first two have been done before. The third hasn't.)

Mmhm. Smell of troll :)

At any rate, if you went to level 50 in the SmC, it could only be after a lot of planning, days of time, and probably exploitation of little-known game mechanics. Anyone who could do it would know about RGRA; and if RGRA was informed of it, they would be buzzing about it for weeks. No RGRA post; therefore, troll.

You could try this free parodical sort-of-MMORPG: The Kingdom of Loathing (http://www.kingdomofloathing.com/). At first its only appeal might appear to be its humorous and parodical attitude, but as you play more you'll find out it actually has tons and tons of other content. Mechanic-wise this game is (IMHO) quite close to early BBS-RPGs.

:D Kingdom of Loathing is awesome. It's actually quite deep, because of the super-weird multiclassing system. Like... you beat the game multiple times with the same character, each time as a different class, but if you beat the game in a certain way you keep that class for the next time you beat it.

So eventually you can have a bunch of primary/secondary classes simultaneously. It's strange. :|

Also, the classes are the best classes EVER. In KoL, I actually can't decide which class is the awesomest, which is almost NEVER the case in ANY game.
