I know. This is strange of me to ask.

Let's say I have to come up with a brief description of what ADOM is. It has to include most of the impressive features of the game, being persuasive such that it can intrigue a newcomer into wanting to play it.

This is what I have so far:

ADOM is the most developed and successful "Roguelike" game in existance today. It features randomly generated dungeons, over two-hundred creatures, over two-hundred possible race/class combinations, thousands of obtainable items, an advanced diety/alignment system, realistic player character (skills, weapon skills, attributes, etc.), vivid narration, multiple endings...

Somehow I want to add the basics -- that it's a single-player save/return RPG-esque game. Perhaps the number of spells would help. The first line is self-praising. I hope it is true.

Complete renovations are welcome!

Aargh. Looks like I'm all alone on this one. I'm too lazy to do it by myself. :P

I'll work something out.

Aye.

...meaning it is a descendant of the ancient game Rogue.

Would that confuse a newbie? Or does it matter?

i don't think it'd matter, but i was thinking more along the lines of:

...which are RPG-type games that typically use text-graphics.

and then mention some examples? (Nethack and Angband spring to mind)

I want the people to be compelled to play the game. Saying ADOM uses ASCII graphics would more than likely turn people away. Examples might be good, except if a person knows what Nethack and Angband are, they know what a Roguelike is! :)

Maybe this is a bit too deep and serious:)

I don't understand. I mean it really depends on the purpose.

Why not mention that ADOM relies alot on the players imagination and intelligence? And patience most of all. ;) And, of course, randomness.

I think you schould put a little more emphasis on the multiple endings. It's a major pluss to the games replay value, and quite unique. Off hand I can't think of a single other game that offer more than distinct way to win.

There might be alternative routes and ways to solve puzzles, but in the end you always end up with the same "ending" for all other games. At best I can think of a few games that let the player select wich "branch" of the storry to continue on (most often you'll have to pick sides in some conflict), but even there you tend to end up with the same result in the end (though you get two widely different games), and more often than not one branch will simply be a "shortcut" (typical exampel beeng in Baldurs Game two where you can either folow Irenecus directly to Underdark or set sail back home. No matter what you pick you'll end up in Underdark, but if you go directly you'll "miss out" on the fish people side quest)...

Um, this is getting long, bottom line: IMHO you schould put a little bit more emphasis on the multiple endings part...

You're right. Let's see...

ADOM is the most developed and successful "Roguelike" game in existance today. It features randomly generated dungeons, over two-hundred creatures, over two-hundred possible race/class combinations, thousands of obtainable items, an advanced diety/alignment system, realistic player character (skills, weapon skills, attributes, etc.), vivid narration, multiple ways to accomplish the goals of the individual player, diverse endings that reflect the alignment and accomplishments of the game played...

How's that? Would you word it differently?

Locke: Note taken. I'll add something along those lines to the paragraph below this one.

nice so far, although be careful not to turn that into a run-on sentance. i can't think of any points your missing.
but i still think there should be some explaination of what a rougelike is exactly; people aren't likely to play something of a type they've never heard of before.

How about I replace "Roguelike" with "freeware?" They're completely different, I know, but it might be best to remove "Roguelike" altogether and freeware is always nice.

with arrow keys or I'd prefer numpad as everyone else... was that a joke btw? :o)
And the easiest way to move is first press "w" and then to the direction where you want to move... the char moves until he/she sees a monster, comes to an item, steps to a trap or runs to a wall... well, he/she stops before the wall :o)

I hate this font 'cause smiles doesn't work well :o)

regarding the game description: i think the most important part is the highly evolved rpg. there are a million things in it, like a real d&d game, unlike graphic games that are usually really simple, have a few spells, a few weapons, etc. the complexity of text based roguelike games is what attracts me.
