I often play necros, bards, mindcrafters, wizards etc. but I also want to play thieves. I have tried them, but all died at ~lvl6. Can anybody write a good strategy please?

I always turn crappy potions into Potions of poison and throw them at enemies.

Thieves are a pretty weak class imho. They are really hard to start off with as their starting equipment is not great, and they aren't brilliant in the mid-late game because almost all of their skills (all except alertness and appraising) can be gained in-game anyway (from Yergius or Bart). They do have some nifty class powers though.
You could try playing an Orc if you're finding the start difficult - they're strong and tough, and they get an extra point of PV over other thieves (studded leather), and they also get Find Weakness, doubly important for thieves because their level 25 class power lets them stun humanoids on a critical hit.

Play a gnome, so you can get the heir gift. That weapon makes the early game a bit easier... But still your char will suck at fighting, so don't forget to run away all the time even if you have a neat weapon. Yeah, and pickpocket everything.
If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

Thanks for everyone. I tried an Orcish Thief, and it is currently on lvl14, with 32 (!) Dexterity.
And I have pickpocketed a scroll of chaos resistance.

I recently played a gnomish thief. Heir item (adamantium dagger of penetration) was really helpful. I used it almost whole game, dual-wielding it with Serpent's Bite later and finally used N&S. And I once pickpocketed Preserver ;) so pickpocketing is useful especially after 32 class power. Try find Far slayer. It is very good for gnomes. Good luck.

Shoplifting definitely pays off. My dark elven wizard winner started the game by stealing the scorched spear from Barnabas, it helped a lot.

I can see robbing other shops (especially artifacts from the black market) being useful, but why bother robbing the casino? You can make all the money you want right there anyway, so make some money and then BUY the item ;)

Robbing the casino is useful if you plan on restocking it repeatedly. After about 10 restocks, buying all the potions cost almost 10m gp alone! That's alot of RT spent gambling.

Thieves are fantastic.

I just got a thief to experience level 50 (first time I've done this, as well as enter the earth and mana temples) who was then transformed into a being of chaos owing to the fact that all my 2 PoCC were turned into poison and I only found 1 SoCR about a minute before I died which I discovered in "do you want to examine your inventory" - didn't save Khelevaster, enter the library or have telepotation in the HMV.

Anyway level 25, 32 and 50 class powers are great. I will definetly be trying them out again.
