Dark elven magicians are the best because of alertness IMO.

They have very high mana, so you should be able to cast plenty of spells, but they're about as physically feeble as any starting combination can be.

My wizard who won was dark elven. However, before I got a winner, I had umpteen dark elven wizards who died right away. This guy was successful because the scorched spear was generated in Barnabas's shop, which I stole right away thanks to a potion of invisibility I started with.
The following is a real Adom message:

The homunculus hits you. You suddenly fall asleep! Do you want to continue to read the spellbook of Calm Monster? [y/N]

Worst side with darkies is waldenbrook's hatred of them. Its harder to generate cash for crownings and stat improvement.
In the long run, nothing really if they can live to level 5-6 and get a few extra books

There's always leggot to sell stuff to. Nowhere near as convenient, but he'll still give you a decent price for Sis.

Unless he is a dwarf. If he is, he is just as bad as waldenbrook.
The rust monster touches your blessed Trident of the Red Rooster. Nothing happens. You laugh at the monster's pitiful attempt.

Dark elves can eat spider corpses without ill effect, too; saved me one or twice when my PC was starving, and spiders were all that there was to be had.

My only win so far has been with a dark elven wizard. So I guess they're pretty good. ;)
You know you've played too much ADOM when you try to throw coins at people wearing similar clothes as yourself.
