First of all, good to be back! I was a poster a while back..glad to see the forum still up and running. >:-)

My experience is this: After descending through the Unremarkable Dungeon, I passed through the gates of the High Mountain Village with a level 10 necromancer. I noticed immediately that one of the ratling guards was missing! I found him deeper in the village, guarding one of the water spaces that's next to the Oracle.

I also noticed that the ogre in the place, who normally guards the jail, was keeping a watchful eye over a nearby tree instead. I've never seen this behavior in all the games I've played before. Anyone else ever have anything like this?

There's often hostile monsters generated in the HMV (like the infamous stone giant lord). Sometimes they attack nonhostile monsters. Speaking of which, hiding behind Hawkslayer can be a good way to get rid of the stone giant lord. The two are pretty evenly matched, so he might not win on his own, but if you get a few hits in too you should be able to kill it between the two of you.

Aahhh....very nice, thanks...I didn't notice a stone giant lord this time through, but I'll keep it in mind in further games.

Meh...since my PCs are almost always highly Chaotic, he just tells me to "Buzz off" anyway; I've already slaughtered the inhabitants of Lawenilothehl and re-populated it with undead, so I'll just go back if I survive the DH and kill ol' Hawkie to see what he drops. >:-E

...come to that, if he happens to generate a corpse, he'd make a great ghul or shadow!

Wow, Vex, that's deliciously evil.

I've never actually got Hawkslayer as a companion. It's always "Do I know you?" How can you actually get him as a companion?

If I remember correctly, you have to be level 25, and then answer "Iceberg" when he asks you some password. I never tried it myself (I only got to level 25 three times in my life).
Move the cursor to the desired position and press [SPACE] when done.
Impossible. Suddenly you stand elsewhere.
You see an ancient altar of black obsidian.

You have to get the password in-game by drinking from a pool. You'll hear a voice say it in your mind, or some message to that effect. Then, if yer of the right level, you can get Hawkslayer.

>:-E Deliciously evil...I like that!

Speaking of the corpse thing...has anyone here ever actually seen Hawkslayer generate a corpse when he died?

"You have to get the password in-game by drinking from a pool." No you don't, you just have to know the password and be the right level and alignment

The guidebook says that you can't get Hawkslayer if you're chaotic or above level 25. Well, I've talked to him plenty of times while neutral or lawful below level 25, and it's always "Do I know you?"

So if anybody knows anything more specific, please share.

You need the password "Iceberg", from pools. Not 100% sure though..

Some guy: you need to be at least level 25 (and also neutral or lawful). Then instead of "Do I know you?" he'll say something about you looking familiar and ask for the secret word. If you get it right, he'll join you.

IIRC, you'd better not turn chaotic while he's your companion, or he'll say "I can't allow this to happen" and attack.

"There is also an experience level requirement which is uncertain. Level 25 PC's have successfully gotten Hawkslayer as a companion, so that stands as a maximum level for the requirement at the moment."

I understand this meaning lvl 25 is the upper limit, after that, no dice.

Also, it is stated in the GB that you need to be N - L, and know the password, which can only be gained via a pool.

There seems to be some dissension here. Meh, I don't want companions anyway. I was just wondering.

Heh heh. You could always buy that flesh golem from the malicious doctor, if yer chaotic. Anyone ever managed to buy that thing? If so, is it any good?

No, it isn't good. It pays 25.000 gold I think, definitely not worth it. And even neutral PCs can get it.

The player, not the PC, must know the password.

And, you must have won twenty fights in the arena, IIRC.

I think the guidebook is simply written wrong, where 25 is supposed to be the LOWEST level you can get him at. I could go run some tests on it if anyone cares enough for me to bother ;)

I know that you don't have to drink from a pool first to get him to be your companion, at least.

No, it's nothing new; only the PLAYER (NOT the character) has to know the password, Iceberg. The guidebook does have this right I think, people just get confused on the terminology.
