I received an unusual message today when I tried to blast a kobold with a fire bolt:

"The female kobold is hit by the fire bolt! The female kobold seems to shrug off the bolt!"

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

one little other question:

can you wish for spellbooks of wish?

Yeah seen it a lot, it's not fire resistance though. The "shrug off" message just means that the spell didn't do enough dammage to penetrate the monsters defence.

If it had fire resistance it would say something like "the female kobold resist's the searing flames".

And you can't wish for spesific spellbooks, so no, though you can wish for just spellbooks and be extremely lucky I suppose (might be a special case that block it though, not sure).

Thanks for answering my question. I came across this table of Probabilities of spellbook generation and I would assume it may reflect the chances of getting a spellbook of wish through a wish. (is this table is even valid...I haven't tested it thorugh)

Anyways here it is (taken from a discussion group):

"The List:

Spellbook Chan Diff Prob
Wish 1 3000 0.03%
Create Item 4 250 0.13%
Petrification 4 120 0.13%

Earthquake 4 80 0.13%

Heal 4 40 0.13%
Death Ray 20 100 0.65%
Mystic Shovel 20 100 0.65%

- hanen't seen this list in the GB so I figured it might be useful here (if it is accurate)

actually jan is (afaik) not correct.
1: the "shrug off" message has nothing to do with how much damage the spell does, it's just a chance, dependent on how tough the monster is (and possibility your spell effectivity or willpower) that the monster will resist the effect of the spell. think of it as though the monster dodged the bolt. If the spell had just not done enough damage to harm the monster, the message would be "the attack does not penetrate the defenses of the female kobold!"
2: it is possible to wish for specific spellbooks - but not specifically for spellbooks of wish. word on the street is that it's possible to wish for just spellbooks and get wish, but I can't personally verify this.
What do you wish for? wands of cat repellent_

I can verify Alex on both points here. Unless I just got lucky when wishing for "spellbooks of invoked devastation" with my orcish priest.
The following is a real Adom message:

The homunculus hits you. You suddenly fall asleep! Do you want to continue to read the spellbook of Calm Monster? [y/N]

I extracted that chart from the code directly, so it should be fully acurate (it's hard to test it of course, but it does fit the general feel. I know someone who has started with a spellbook of Wish, so danger level isn't a factor, and you do see more spellbooks of Light and Darkness than anyhting else). There shouldn't be many exceptions (library, specific books given to you from the druid or Kelly) at all. It'll take you roughly 1000 wishes, on average, to get a spellbook of wish (wishing for just 'spellbooks', people have gotten one this way before)... I think you might as well stick with your ring of exchange wish engine instead of trying to switch when it takes that many ;)

I suspect that it depends on class as well - my current character is a priest, and I seem to be mostly finding non-combat spellbooks. I'm level 32 or so, have cleaned out a spellbook shop several times and the gift shop once, and I have no ball spells other than one book of invoked devastation. Bolt spells don't seem as common as they are for wizards either, although strangely I've found a lot of petrification (I have 3500 castings, more than web or magic lock). And bless, dispel undead, and cure disease have been much more common than your table suggests - almost even with light/darkness.

Also, what happened to magic missile? It's not in the table under either name.

Yeah, my priest also had quite a problem with finding offensive spellbooks, I only found one ball spell book (lightning ball) before going in the ID for Filk, when I found a spellbook of ice ball and one of fire ball. I had to wish for spellbooks of invoked devastation.

*blink* Magic Missle is indeed not on the list... strange. I'll have to check again.

I don't _think_ that priests have less chance for offensive spells, though it would make sense. I'll see if I can find anything else that modifies the chances. Never know where it might be hiding with how confusing the code is and all ;)
