hi.

i'm dead

i have made literally 15 characters in the past two days, all of which have died nearly instantly.

the highest was a level 9 gnome wizard who died from acute poisining as a result of entering a room with about ten billion snakes.

there's gotta be something i'm doing wrong.

any tips?

Play a heartier character.

When I was just starting adom, I really like trolls. Watch out for starvation though.

Also, if you're about to die make sure you pray (use '_' key).

Other than that, realize that the game is hard and don't get too attached to your characters.

...

oh

i thought you could only pray at the altars.

hmmm.....

that certainly helps.

what is the difference between a wizard and a necromancer?

actually, is there somewhere i can look up all the differences between the classes and races?

i have no idea which make the best combos, but i went for a while playing grey elf wizards, and they seemed to do well.

hi, you didn't do anything wrong. in the early game - i'm guessing you were in the small puppy cave - it's really worth running like hell sometimes, especially in that cave against the ants, because there can be heaps of them and generally the character isn't yet strong enough, and the items not fancy enough yet, to get you through it. once you gain a few levels, things like ant-holes are easy, but early game like that, you're really just fresh meat.

Don't attack the ants early on; avoid them.

I see your trollish beastfighter is dual-weilding weapons. First off, dual-weilding isn't a very great idea unless you have the two-weapon combat skill. Second, you're a beastfighter: they fight best barehanded, as do monks.

Trolls are a good choice for a new character. They are weak in the late game, but very strong in the early game.

You can get 2 prayers answered before you make any sacrifices on an altar, 3 if you're born under the candle.

Work your food preservaton skill up to 60 as quickly as possible. At 60+, you'll have about twice the chance to get a corpse from a monster, giving you more food.

Definately don't be afraid to run away. Also note that if you are being attacked by more than 1 or 2 monsters at a time, your attack power will be weakened. The more monsters around you, the weaker... so try to fight stuff in corridors where possible.

Always train missle skills. It was still possibly early for this character, but missle skills are lifesavers. If you find some rocks laying around, pick them up and use them as missles. Set your tactics to Berserk when your attackiing from a distance, but remember to set it back down afterwards (when the monster gets close to you). Set tactics to cowardly when running away. (To set tactics, press capital T and change tactics with + and -)

ADOM is very hard on new players (and old players ;P). It's a difficult game, and takes some getting used to ;)

The most important thing is: Stay focused. once you lose your focus on the game, it is certain that the RNG will punish you instantly.

Second thing is what all intelligent warriors know to do: Run away. When you see something you can't deal with, RUN, and return when you are stronger. You don't NEED to kill everything in sight the first time you see it.

And as said, always fight in a corridor when possible. It is better to flee to a corridor to fight than to stand your ground in the middle of a room.

And when you are about the face death, first check your inventory; there might be potions you've forgotten, maybe you got a spare wand of teleportations there. If not, pray. If nothing else is left and death is sure to come, drink unidentified potions, zap unIDed wands and read unIDed scrolls.

A necromancer specialises in raising people (and other humanoids) from the dead to make them into undead slaves. Since this is generally considered evil, necromancers start more chaotic than other characters of the same race.

In ADOM, necromancers are much more difficult to play than wizards. Unlike all other magic-using types, they do not start with the Healing skill, and their chaotic alignment can make it harder for them to learn it.

I suggest that you forget about necromancers until you're more experienced and stick with wizards instead. I rather like Drakeling Wizards, because Drakelings are pretty strong and tough and start with several useful skills.

I advise you (and everybody who hasn't done it :P) to read ADOM manual completely. There you'll find very good basis for the beginning. Including descriptions for all races & classes & skills. And a lot more.
The rust monster touches your blessed Trident of the Red Rooster. Nothing happens. You laugh at the monster's pitiful attempt.
