ok, then:

there are many, many posts asking about the *best* combo for race/profession, and the answer in all of them is the same ("they are all pretty much equal")

so here, i want to ask you what the *worst* combination of race/class is.

here are the ones that rank the lowest on my personal high scores list:

1 gnome assassin
1 troll merchant
3 troll wizards
1 hurthling beastfighter.

can i get some hints on which combos to avoid?

Farmers and merchants. Despite race.

Drakelings and hurtlings .That's it.
One hundred warriors of Lucifer, they brought the fire with them
And they made storm of fire, that blew over paradise
And behold, one hundred and six, monsters from the inferno
They brought the nuclear destruction, that devastated The Holy Realm

uhhh . . what's wrong with drakelings? Good stats, acid breath, Alertness, Food Preservation & Music, best race imo.

And what's wrong with huthlings?

Low strength isn't a problem for long.

Quick level gain.
Goot strating skill with thrown rocks.
Free ring.

My favourite race.

Merchant are not bad with their coins and thus survive quite well if start with decent speed. My dark elven merchant jumped 2-3 lvl in VD:1 when he meet a wererat. I think worst race/class combo shall be a trollish bard without 7lb.

I love playing fighters, i don't know why. Sure, you have to make the choice between Herbalism and healing at the beginning of the game, but i was never big on herbs to begin with.

Class powers arent exceptional, but i do seem to have -great- luck with them. Especially Dwarven fighters :)

Worst? Druids, hands down. Early game you starve if your not a hurthling due to lack of animal food. You level extremely slow for the same reason, avoiding killing animals. I hate being neutral as well.

My best non-cheated, non-savescummed char is a dwarven fighter. I chose herbalism, transformed big room into a farm. Got crowned with BoW, so healing became unneeded.
Fighters are nice.

what about dwarven merchants?

i seem to be having the best luck with dwarven merchants, gnome wizards, and i've just recently begun to try orcish archers

and just out of curiosity, what is savescumming?

savescumming is backing up your savegame and restoring it when you die, making you practically immortal.

when i try to build a bridge, it asks me to 'use a suitable tool'

what tool do i need for that?

i have a log, and the bridge building ability (i saved the carpenter, and got the bridge building manual and the hatchet, and i cut down one of the trees in the rearby forest)

Demented yam, drop the stuff on the top line in the Teriyno (sp?), the people don't move to that line (not 100% sure, but my stuff never was stolen from there).

Yep, you always want to train up alternative skills... good to have both melee and missle skills no matter what you are.

You have to {U}se the hatchet to apply bridgebuilding, IIRC. Icing over water with frost bolt or a wand of cold is generally a lot easier than building bridges, though.

Stuiff dropped on the very outside border of Terinyo is safe from most folk, though at least the sherrif will move out one space father than the rest, not sure if they can move 2 (to the outside edge).

"I love playing fighters, i don't know why. Sure, you have to make the choice between Herbalism and healing at the beginning of the game, but i was never big on herbs to begin with."

You can get both herbalism and fast healing, if you choose candle as your starsign. I always do when I'm playing a char who doesn't have both, like assassin or archer or something else. Herbalism give you practically infinite amount of food, healing stuff, 25 Dx&To&Wi and sicknes/poison cure. You simply need herbalism.

Not quite; you can get all the effects of herbs just fine without herbalism. You can manage pretty well by simply reading a blessed scroll of uncursing after you've harvested for a while. (You'll harvest about 3 times slower without the skill, but that's not too terrible, just a little more tedious.)

I prefer fighters, I seem to get bored with pure casters.

Oh, just something a little silly....I saved the carpenter in my current game (dwarven fighter) and I received a:

hatchet of devastation (+1, 5d6+10)

Woohoo!

Someone put hurthling beastfighter up there...
I got one that is doing pretty well now.

He walked over all opposition in the start, did UD and then whacked VD. Once herbs show up its no stopping these guys.

Only problem is the general with beastfighters, that their damage is pretty low in mid-game, when every other char (except monk) has gotten a decent weapon. I mean, what good is 1d14+20 at level 16? No slaying, no penetration or poison or...bah. Have to find some safe way to level up. Of course I had to get a sweet weapon that would take any character through the whole game for precrowning gift..

Beastfighters are truly good once they get going. I recently finished the game with a gnomish one, though I haven't left the world yet (thinking of raising all stats to 99 first, just for fun). It was quite easy all the way to the mana temple where N-V gave the char a scare. But even the fire temple was almost like a walk in a park.
