i picked up this cloak from an elf i killed in one of the dungeons, and put it on.

it was an invisibility cloak

i then proceded to walk around the level, but the thing was: they could still see me.

i was getting attacked, even though i was invisible.

how?

What I'd like to know is how my PC is able to tell if monsters are hostile while he is invisible.

If you hit a monster invisible, it then can "see" you. Stupid IMO, you should be able to be invisible to the monster again if you escape its LOS.

einherjar--Look at the monsters; it'll tell you.

Warlord is correct; if you hit a monster in melee, with missiles, or with a Ball or Burning Hands spell, you dispel your Invisibility, but only with regard to that particular monster. Note that Bolt spells don't reveal you to monsters.

Some monsters can see invisible characters.

No... I mean how can a monster be hostile if it has never seen me before and doesn't know I'm there?

Right. Kobolds at D:1 can see invisibility. They don't attack, but when I look at monsters I see "hostile."

Does he a) roam around in the dungeon, foam at his chin and weapon in hand or b) just taking a friendly stroll around his neighburhood?

There is a slight diffrence in appearence between the two kinds of creatures.

Ah... I thought you meant "hostile" as in "attacking you". No, "hostile" is just a monster status that determines what they do when they detect you--not whether they detect you in the first place.

Sigh. Does it really matter?

Let us leave this thread and hope that no thread-necromancers will revive this. Yes?
