I'm not quite sure, but I think it might scare of lesser undead

Becoming undead? Do you mean a reaping the benefits of a certain necromancer class power?

Alex, I believe you are thinking of the "turn undead" power. This doesn't mean becoming an undead yourself, it means turning them away from you, that is, scaring them so that they run away.

But ofcourse you can become an undead in ADOM - the profit it that you get a diffrent death message in the Hall of Fame; instead of "was killed by a vampire/wight/wraith/shadow" you get "was turned into a vampire/wight/wraith/shadow" - all you have to do is get killed by melee attack that drains stats, or get one of your stats drained to 0.

I wasn't sure for a long time either what "turn undead" meant, until I played as a priest and used it. (I thought it might destroy them, or "turn" them friendly or something)
Molach: "I like to have 200+ hp and over 5 good healin potions when I do [the fire] temple. AND some way of killing the Wyrm"

Morio: "Some way of killing the worm is recommended, yes :D"

Turn undead will repulse undeads (make them scared of you and run away), at higher levels (think that only apply to priests though) it can also be used to outright destroy "lesser" undead (good way to clear a room if a NPC Necro have been to summon happy.

In D&D evil characters will turn the undead friendly rather than scare them away when they use the ability, but ADOM doesn't work that way.

in some versions of D&D i believe, it will actually kill undead (v 3.5, used for the rulesets in temple of elemental evil, and NWN, whiever ruleset was used in that)

You could destroy undead with Turning in Icewind Dale 1 even. Though you had to be pretty high level.
