This is something i've always wondered about. Are some artifacts generated more often than others? i.e. in surges/vaults/Gvaults/casino/other areas with high artif. generation? Crowning doesnt count because of the preset possibilites. I've played ADOM for years. I have never once gotten the shirt of the saints, boots of the div. messenger, either artifact cloak, iron crown of havlor, Grod, bugbiter, sun's messenger, or the silver key. On the flip side, i've had Wyrmlance generated in literally over 80% of my games that ive made it to at least the lower CoC. Being as i regard wyrmlance as a useless weapon, this is disparaging. Its damage dice is about the same as Rune covered trident, and (could be my imagination) the dragonslaying property it has is startlingly weak. The trident is guarunteed as an artifact, has far more modifiers, and the two slaying properities it has are far more useful. But i digress: Ive had black tome of alsophocus generated in so many stores i cannot even count. If i get an artifact missile weapon, it is either whirlwind or far slayer. I get ironfist in almost every game. Bracers of war seem to generate EXTREMELY often from the PoU throw in D:49. Is it sheer dumb luck? Or are some artifacts more common? artifacts i havent seen in 6 years of playing: shirt of saints crown of havlor silver key no girdle artifacts the holy scarf one bugbiter justifier kinslayer (black longsword?) perions platemail small shield honor/glory seeker or whatever artifacts im pretty sure are crowning only: Suns messanger divine messanger vanquisher barnabiks cloak of defense cloak of oman silver arrow true aim artifacts i almost always see in long games: wyrmlance robes of resistance (both i seem to get quite often in big evil smith hordes) bracers of war crown of leadership farslayer obsidian quarrel whirlwind il get at least 4 of those ones in any game i go all the wya to the botom of CoC (if not all) the ones ive never seen might be crowning gifts and i have never played the right race/class combo btw. wyrmslayer rocks it does almost as much damage as and eternium halberd of devastation and for the 3 big wyrms you have to beat for an ultra its handy( or you know a dragon greater vault) and i generaly tend to find it way faster then rune trident gets to me.. unless i have raven sign |

There seems to be a higher chance of some artifacts being generated than others. The rune covered sling acounts for about 75% of my surges of power. The scorched spear appears in most games as well. However, only a limited amount of artifacts can be randomly generated. There is (was?) a patch so that all artifacts could be randomly generated. With it, my level 40 bard (who was just aged to death) had the Iron Crown of Havlor and the elven long bow generated randomly along with a few standards. Even with the patch, I've still never seen Grod and only seen Vanquisher once. On the plus side I haven't seen the Black Tome in a very long time. I like Wyrmlance. It's slaying ability is very weak but it gives a much higher to hit bonus and a few more damage points than the rune covered trident. |

Quite right, cobalt. I use paladin so much that i almost regard perion's mithril platemail, justifier, and the scarf to be common items, as they are the paladin's crowning gifts =P I have not, however, ever obtained any of those in a normal game with a nonpaladin PC. Of course this isnt the topic of the thread but i did a little numbercrunching of Trident vs. Wyrmlance Trident: 3d12+6 = 19.5 avg + 6 const= 25.5 avg / 42.0 max Wyrmlance: 4d8+10 = 18.0 avg + 10 const = 28.0 avg / 42.0 max Wyrmlance has a +9 to hit advantage over trident, which is quite significant. However, the trident is +6/+4 dv/pv over the lance, which is also significant. 12 dexterity is a lot of dexterity. Huge advantage. More DV, speed. I'm not sure im right about this but does dex improve your to-hit? Im quite positive it does for missile weapons but not so sure on melee. Immune Cold is really pretty worthless. Waterbreath is also rather worthless. SeeI is a good help. You should already have some form of stun resistance by the time you get wyrmlance. Then theres UD/Demonslay vs. Dragonslay. Anyway, this is all a moot point if you get the ToTRR which is also a polearm and the "best weapon" in the game. I'd agree wyrmlance is a valid 2 handed weapon to use if you find it before the trident, since i believe the trident is delivered on lv36, rather late in the game. They are both polearms and train in the same category. A while back i was really pondering this point and decided to do a little experiment. It just required a little savescumming: i would get to precrown piety and pray. Record what artifact i got, quit, and do it again with a restored file. Indeed, i was able to get most artifacts this way (some were still interestingly missing) What was really fascinating is that i didnt get Wyrmlance once! Out of 110 tries, the most common artifact i got was robes of resistance, followed by protector. of course this would be subject to the random variation, but i was able to obtain artifacts that i sought after in normal games but i never was able to get, for example vanquisher (except on barbs). Anyway, though this was a savescummed game, technically, i stopped on the 110th try because i got Vanquisher and decided to play the game through with it. That weapon really is the death of every PC that gets it. Normally i play my paladins as a fighter/spellcaster mix with decent bow proficiency, trying to keep my fights to a range if possible, but meleeing when they get close. But with Vanquisher you quickly find yourself meleeing everything that gets in your way =( |

Wow lord frederick you got vanquisher as pre crown? ive done some precrown testing as well and i never got vanquisher as one and still never saw crown of havlor, but your right wyrm lance never came up either though its generated quite often in games maybe therse a Pre crown list for every race/class combo and character generated ( a little like crowning gift) and possible precrown gifts are randomly selected from that list? p.s. hammerhead seems to be semi rare, i get it sometimes throwing the useless potion on hte ice level but if i go a long game with a dwarf smith they always seem to find it/ crown or pre crown with it |

pps. debate on wyrmlance 1) if your fighting a big dragon use wyrmlance 2) attacking emperor lich use rune trident ;) i usualy get both in a game but i supose i would probably use trident more because of the dv/pv and dex. though once i did get an eternium halberd of devastation that was sweet. current DE Bard has an eternium halberd of Penetration... look out molochs.. |

A pessimist sees a dark tunnel. An optimist sees a light at the end of that tunnel. A realist sees a train. And the train driver sees three idiots on the tracks. |

My current Char, Dwarven Assassin got precrowned with wyrmlance. But it could be that precrown is somewhat class- (or even race-) specific. |

This topic (bug or not bug) has been discussed in rgra many times, AFAIK. LordFrederick: I suppose that the Wyrmlance was reserved as a crowning gift or an uselessness gift in this game, and therefore you could not get it in any other way. |

"Kinslayer", "Justifier", "Cat's Claw", "Black Thumb", "Bugbiter", "Trusted One", "Grod", "Death's Blade", "Vanquisher", staff of Wanderer, "Sun's Messenger", "True Aim", silver key, Perion's Plate Mail, "Nature's Friend", "Lust for Glory", Shirt of the Saints", Aylas Holy Scarf, Crown of Havlor, Brannalbin's Cloak, "Shezestriakis", "Celestrix", Cloak of Oman, boots of divine messenger. are listed as non-obtainable artifacts. At first i thought that was not possible since i have gotten many of these generated. But as i read from the site you linked, Z, i have used many patches on my ADOM executable from different sources for bugfixes on winbeta4 (since the original version from adom.de was extremely buggy on my computer, with frequent crashes) It is likely that the restrictions have been removed, which would mean my experience with odd artifact generation should just be attributed to luck. Consequently, i most likely have access to artifacts that original versions don't... is this considered an unfair advantage if i was to post victories? |

The ones out of that list that you have got are only obtainable by being crowned. They can't be generated randomly - unless you use the patch, which fixes it. Is that an unfair advantage? Not really, when you consider that you're lowering your chance to get Bracers of War, Preserver, Nature's Companion etc. What do you wish for? wands of cat repellent_ |

I suppose that's so. But even with a patch and extensive scum testing, i still have a pile of artifacts ive never gotten, a smaller pile that ive only gotten when i used my above savescumming tests. =T I think it would be cool to get lust for glory or celestrix... but still never =( |

Off topic: I got my recent archer crowned with Nature's Companion, great stuff. Then spent another eternity saccing monsters for a second precrowning, and once I was extremely close I sighed, knowing it would prolly be something shitty. Well not the most complete junk, but I hoped for Wyrmlance or similar, got Serpent's Bite. |

huh, BoW appearing in each game? that's odd to me, since in my games they almost don't appear;). i agree that ironfist, the damn sling, and the crown of leadership are likely to be generated, would even say that you should have at least one of them before experience level 20. add the tome of alsof-kass to this list. :( What do you wish for? *THUMBS* EM_ Silence.
