i know its a stupid question but what id the difference between precrowning and crowning:

my wizard is n= and very close to his god- does that mean anything?

i had a previous priest who became champion of order? does that mean he was crowned?

Yup, crowning means that you become a champion.

When you get crowned you get an artifact (different for different races and classes) , an amulet and an immunity, this can happen only once in a game, and if you change alignment after beeing crowned you will become a fallen champion, and cannot be crowned again. (requires extreme alignment L+, N= or C-)

When you get pre-crowned you get a random artifact. and you can change alignment after beeing pre-crowned without any real disadvantages.
(not extreme alignment)

as you are N= you would get crowned if you keep saccing until absolutely close

additionally, precrowning has a lower level limit (8+3 per artifact generated throughout the game) while crowning doesn't (i don't only know if you can be crowned below level 8). and you can do postcrownings after the main crowning; the minimum level is same as by precrowning, but you don't need not to be=) of an extreme alignment.
given this, a precrowning or two in the early game may seem better than direct crowning, but in practice you'll sooner or later (usually after first (pre-)crowning) get bored and forteit the possibility of more artifacts being generated.

and of course if you need to know more, read the guidebook.

whoa, imagine a dwarven merchant with 4 gold talents (approximately 50k gold by start) - immediate crowning without scoring a firstkill?;)
