And any special tips? I'm playing one as an archer, a dark elf merchant. Is that good?

i'd choose a troll, dwarf or orc. missile combat is a good choice, assuming you use gp as ammo (merchants recieve really formidable bonuses while throwing coins, it's possible to kill almost everything this way - in the early game). i'd train in polearms as well - that big dv bonus is desirable, i believe.

I love merchants :)

Merchant doesnt have anything much special aside from their (possibly) starting Alchemy.

Still, a troll s* as a merchant, since they wont benefit from merchant's aggressive carrying capacity later on. The only good thing (as usually) is that they are tough at the beginning. However, thanks to merchant's coin throwing ability, they are rarely hit at the beginning anyway.

Gnomes get quite some (arguable) benefits as a merchant at kashino. They also advance quite fast, making throwing coins very effective till lvl 20s (at least to me.) Though, they are deadly with rock throwing anyway.

Dark elf also make good merchants with double trained Crit+. Also, many nonguaranteed shops are dark elven's.

High and Gray Elfs are VERY BAD merchants, they have low St and To, and are hated everywhere.

That's it for now.

Hurthlings and/or Gnomes Merchants get really low prices in shops later on, due to their good standing with almost every other race.

Thanks to the kasino, that low price bonus mostly benefit, realtime wise, in the kasino.

tonghoanh -> what about dwarves and orcs? (you seem to understand the merchant game tactics pretty good, so i ask you - feel proud:D). they are massive in terms of St/To and advance almost as fast as humans/elves.

Dwarf: They dont have any "combat" skill to support already-weak merchants. All their skills but mining (which is crap) could be easily obtained early-to-mid game, which is another bad thing. Their only true strength is that their gods like gold, which I think are the best gods of the game. They have moderate carrying capacity, which is not very important.

Orc: They age too quick >.< Almost all the game with Orcs and Trolls of mine come with Long-lifespan talent, which is worthless if I play venerable races. Though merchants have lots starting talents, it still hurt. Orcs are also among the mostly hated races, especially dwarves. I've had an orcish merchants who had to folk out 2000 gps for each potion in the dwarf town. Their strength: Find Weakness and Backstabbing. I always feel that orcish chars have orcs and orges neutral somewhat.

That's it for now! I LOVE MERCHANTS :)

y'know, dwarf merchants are fun for another reason. if you scum for birthsign/stats (need to be divisable by 7) enough to get a dwarf merchant with 4 talents, and waste all of these for increasing your starting wealth (this'll give you a x24 multiplier), you'll get something like 50k gp. this is roughly enough for a level 1 crowning with some (not many) live sacs. this is not really useful since merchants often recieve junk as crowning gifts, but it's not hard to do and funny...
other races are bad for thet trick since dwarf merchants are the only characters that start with 2000+ gp and only dwarven gods lust for gold.

if i'm not mistaken, merchants are fucked when they try to sell stuff.

i was happy with my gnomish merchant buying out potion shops at 2000 gold and large rations at 4gp, but i sold my large ration at like 2gp. i think the program reduces selling price with buying price, so selling your shit earns much less money for a merchant. piles of sis are still $$ though.
