Hey all, just started playing ADOM and was concerned about the 90 day time limit? It seems that it's not possible to reach the high levels needed to close the gates in that time period, I would love to mess around and tour the world, but that 90 day limit seems to say no way! Anyone shed some light on this? thanx!! |

There is no real time limit per se. After 90 days, the rate at which you get passively corrupted in applicable areas increases. The game does not end. However, corruption kind of acts as a limit. If you can't find ways to keep yourself corruption-free in the later parts of the game, welcome to jelly-hood. [Edited 1 time, last edit on 7/13/2005 at 22:12 (GMT -5) by Palagran] |

increased background corruption rate after day 90 isn't a real trouble if you play wisely. in the early-/midgame you need to gather items and weapon skills, which takes a long period of time - simply venture the corruption-free zones (there are a lot). in the late game, use teleportation to avoid staying on levels you have already explored. after the mana temple, you should still have some pocc/socr you won't really need. utilize them via mana orb... this is the way i develop my characters;). my only yasd from corruption was an advanced wizard that - due to a mistake - 'u'sed the mana orb when his corruption score already was 18000 or alike (he still had several socr). |

Nice replies thanx guys!! Not sure what you mean by using the Corruption removal pots/scrolls via the Mana Orb? oh I haven't been as far as the mana temple so I dunno what orb is :P Ya I am still missing teleportation items, I dunno how non-casters get by without spells, do you have to rely on tele. wands? Or is there other ways to tele. for non-mages? thanx again!! |

P.S. Another thing I have trouble dealing with is un-Id'd items, without the spell or the merchant class how do you deal with this? I mean the items you can't ID like rings/ammy's and scrolls/pots by wearing them. I hope you don't say find more ID scrolls and bless them :P |

Well yeah, you pretty much do have to find more ID scrolls (and bless them). Well there are one or two other "tricks" as well. For example items are always identified in shops (except the casino), so if you for example find a ring shop you can look at the shop's inventory and if they have any ring types (also work for wands, scrolls etc) you havent' yet idnefified you'll be eable to recognize them from then on. If you already are literate the dwarven elder will also identify ALL your equipment once as a reward for one of his quests (same effect as a blessed scroll of ID). ID scrolls are fairly common though, so you usualy have no big trouble getting enough of them in my experience, the problem might be to identify scrolls of identify in the first place. Although failing all else you can usualy just read one of the type of scroll you have the most of, it's almost always a scroll of ID. There is also the spell of identify, but it's relatively rare, and only realy usefull for spellcaster classes anyway. Besides it only work on one item at a time. Jan Erik Mydland HoF admin |

Certain items always have the same name when unidentified - for example, "watery potion" is always a potion of water. http://tankefel.blogspot.com/ So far you have only killed one wild cat. |

"Not sure what you mean by using the Corruption removal pots/scrolls via the Mana Orb? oh I haven't been as far as the mana temple so I dunno what orb is :P" i mean taht because by the endgame most characters have some unnecessary potions of cure corruption/scrolls of chaos resistance it's good to exploit the mana orb. that artifact boosts your mana permanently by 3-4 (iirc) whenever used, but also applies circa 3 corruptions. (this allows you to trade corruption removal stuff and the unicorn's quest reward for Ma) What do you wish for? *THUMBS* EM_ Silence. Silence. .... *THUMB* *THUMB* *THUMB* You die... |

Here is how I ID things with my non-caster characters. 1) By weight and odd names - Good equipment tends to have a different weight and sometimes even an odd name. (Worn boots for example). A broadsword weighs 80 but a mithril broadsword weighs less. You may miss that ever so useful vampiric weapon or some such if you only go by weight but hey, every little bit helps. Remember, weights is not everything but it helps. 2) If your god likes you, you can drop ANY item on an altar and it will give you the blessed, uncursed, cursed status of the item. If you KNOW that the item in question is not cursed (ie, a weapon), equip it to see what it can do. |

I'd say QuantumBinary hit it right on the head, but a few things to expand upon: When looking at a weapon, the lower its weight is, the better. For example, a normal halberd weighs 100s but an eternium halberd weighs 50s. Thus, you can usually spot a dud weapon from it's better brethren by scoping weights. The same applies for armor, mostly, but with armor it's better to look for odd weights and descriptions rather than lesser weights. Also, look at the color of the symbol, too. A white shield that weighs significantly more than a normal one is crystal. It might help to familiarize yourself with artifact weights and descriptions -- if you don't mind spoilers, navigate to www.andywlms.com/adom and check out the appendix at the bottom with all the artifact descriptions. Pay special attention to the ones that have un-identified qualities that look almost exactly like normal items of their type (ie, staff of the archmagi unidentified looks like a normal 1d10 quarterstaff). Priests start with detect item status at a higher level than merchants, and they can increase it faster, too, usually getting it to 100 by the third or fourth level. Thus, about 99.9% of all items will be generated with their status known. Scrolls of identify are very useful and very common. Once you can consistently get to Dwarftown, you will find it prudent to find out the blessing status on the scrolls, get them all blessed, and read them when necessary. In fact, it is a good idea to stash the scrolls of identify somewhere safe, and only read them when you have a large amount of things to be identified. |
