i used to get all my characters stuck at the toef even after 4 years, but the first game that i actually got past it was also my first win. the game usually gets easier after that, air/earth temples are nothing, just be prepared for NV in mana temple. so dont give up! good luck people.

I've played this game for 4 years too and I got past ToEF ONCE, with a gnomish priest. Then I descended to the Casino and acid bolted a mimic in the shop. The bolt hit the shopkeeper too and he killed me. I was !extremely! annoyed so I loaded a backup file which I had created after doing ToEF. I kept playing on and died again so why not just savescum all the way to the end?

Ok, I tell you, I submitted that char into the HoF. But I was very frustrated that I didn't win without cheating and it took me so helluva long time so I just had to. Sorry. Jan Erik you may now remove it. It's a gnome priest named Karl.

Btw, earth temple IS hard. When you have 4 earth elementals attacking you, it is highly possible that they bring your hp down to 0 in one turn. I was smashed down to 1hp, prayed and got healed and crowned. :)

So what? I've lost lvl 33 Drakish Priest with 4 orbs yesterday, almost ready for final battle. He even killed Ki-Rinn :)
Guess, who managed to kill my char?

Nope. Keep guessing.
My char was too tough for any RNG trick. BTW, he was crowned, wore Ankh..

You are NEVER too tough for the RNG. It will prove you wrong the second you start to belive that you can stand up against it...

A "too much stuff on the floor" bug killed him, or some other random crash.

My best character had it easy in the Earth Temple and the Blue Dragon Caves, but she became a WMoPC in the UL. I was going to kill a white worm in one room of UL:4 and then read an SoCR. I killed the worm, and on that very turn I died.

Ok. You can stop guessing. I just was gaining enough XP for levelup to 34 on the bottom of the rift. The reason was to rise Stealth to 100 and to get wierd tome from librarian.
I had about 120K to go - half an hour and would have gotten it.

And suddenly... :-P

Power Failure! :)

I know that there are wierd things generated by RNG, I mantioned that I even encountered Ki-Rinn, and someone here complained about never seeng one. I even DeathRayed it. But anyway, under *careful comand* a wizard/priest with good stats for his/her level and Teleport/Ethereal Bridge in standard situations can barely be killed that easy. Most cases of 'sudden death' on these stages are a mixture of real RNG action + loss of player's concentration. Like "And what if I hit this thing in meele one more time". Or pressing '4' of whatever even without such thoughts.

About claw bugs of the proper size: normal one would barely reach it. They are darker in appearance, and their chance of killing ~500 HP player with DV of ~75 in a single turn is small.
All the others, even in great numbers, would have tasted Improved Fireball (Invoked Devastation, that is)
I should mention that this Drakeling PC was 'lucky' enough to encounted white dragon vault. Also, he was 'lucky' enought to have his lame commander pressing '4' while having a cave lion west of him.
Also, he dug up several master liches in dvarven graveyard. Killed all thingies mentioned above. Without HP falling below 1/2.

If we include power failures, system crashes and cats pressing keys on keyboard into RNG, then yes. My char was killed by RNG. But not just ADOM RNG (lesser one) but by a Real World's RNG.
