Could I get a hint on where to find the "special equipments" that's needed to scale the mountains to the east of Terinyo?

You don't really need to climb any mountains, not until later in the game. And you certainly don't need to climb THOSE mountains.
You can find Climbing Sets [180s] as random drops from monsters, randomly in dungeons, and there are 2 guaranteed -

Spoiler
one in the pyramid, on the first level, on the east side, along with other usefull tools and a bone (the previous owner of the tools I presume - the pyramid is that you expect one to be: full of traps), the other is in the dark cave filled with water traps and gremlins, which in south-west corner of the world.

A pessimist sees a dark tunnel.
An optimist sees a light at the end of that tunnel.
A realist sees a train.
And the train driver sees three idiots on the tracks.

Hey thanks--very helpful, I found the caverns of chaos finally. Pretty fun except the bee's killed my large dog, *pout*

I have one more annoying newb question... just how do I bless things, or uncurse them. With holy water I think, but how do I make my potions of water holy? Dropping them on an altar just id's their status so far as I can tell.

Gods don't usually do thngs for free. In order to recieve *anything* from them, you must make them [err.. him or her] happy.
Gods tend to become happy when you 'o'ffer things to them. Those things might be something you carry with you, or something that walks by itself.

I actually just found my first altar in the CoC, and sacrificed everything that seemed suitable. Guess that just wasn't quite enough. Is there any way to tell how "close" you are to your god, without having to be a paladin or priest (who I'd assume have provisions made for them in that area)?

SenseAndViolets: when you offer something you may get a message specifying your PC's relation to his/her deity. This message can be used to determine the relation:

Spoiler

Good messages include:
"You feel very close to <deity>"
"You feel extremely close to <deity>"
"You feel absolutely close to <deity>" (1.1.x only)

With all of these messages the relation is good enough to get holy water. Just drop some water to a coaligned altar and it will be transformed into holy water. No need to pray for that.

Also, it is possible to determine to check the relation without altar

Spoiler

Use a holy symbol. The message is either
"You feel comfortable." or (IIRC)
"You feel uncomfortable."

The first one means it is safe to pray

You can get high piety by sacrificing living creatures on your altar. Just lead them on the altar and press 'O'ffer. When doing this, make sure you don't accidently step on the altar because an enemy nearby might do the same thing to you! And that's an instant game over.

Some hints:
-you can lead monsters up and down the stairs.
-your deity won't like it if you sacrifice creatures co-aligned with the altar.
-spawned or summoned creatures cannot be sacrificed.

There's more about this in this link:

Aye, there be spoilers ahead.

Thanks for the hints all, are there any scrolls to tell the alignment of a creature? And, will all creatures of one type have the same alignment, or does this vary by the individual?

Not many monsters are lawful. The only ones I can think of that would be common are dwarves and blink dogs. Someone will come up with more. Basically, lawfuls can sacrifice pretty much anything.

Neutrals have the most trouble. All animals are neutral, as are some humanoids. Be careful as a neutral.

Chaotic can sacrifice anything.

Also white unicorns, ki-rin (does it even have a plural form ?) and solars are lawful, but they are very rare (with the exception of white unicorn). Most animals are neutral, as well as some humanoids. AFAIK all kobolds, orcs, ogres and goblinoids are chaotic as well as chaos creatures. Undead and constructs can't be sacced.

If you don't mind being spoiled you can check Andy Williams Guidebook. It contains a plethora of information, including the alignments of all monsters.

Spoiler
A slight correction to what Echo has posted is that chaotic gods welcome all sacrifices - even chaotic creatres

There is a spell that might help ya...

"Evil" animals are chaotic. Trial and error and common sense can be a guideline here. If you happen to be a dog-hater, try not to let that cloud your judgement when deciding if a common dog is evil. A dog from the abyss, on the other hand...

"*WHAT A MEDIOCRE SIGN OF DEVOTION. IMPROVE!*"
Well, from a game-balancing viewpoint, if you could sacrifice summoned creatures it would be a bit easy to lure a elven wizard or dark elven priestess near an altar for quick messiah-hood. However, there is some of a workaround that can be noted...

Spoiler

You can sacrifice the corpses as normal.
If playing a hurthling, COOK their corpses (as your god will really like them then.
Sadly, spiders aren't chaotic so spider-factory won't work for neutrals. (Spiders look mean, and attack on sight, but this is just because of their instinct, they don't choose to be chaotic on ya)
