What do you think is the best (easiest to win with) melee race/class combination?

My vote is for gnomish barbarian.

Is it just me, or orcish barbarian is a cinch compared to a gnomish barb?

Could you also write at least few arguments, so that we can understand/learn something as well?

Drakish beastfighter, eh? The ToEF will bring one down.

Gnomish barbarian is best because of fast exp gain.

Hurthling assasins. Great skills, starts of with loads and loads of dagger marks and, to boot, a whole load of daggers.

And cooking. Underestimated skill, that one.

I really don't get it with ToEF and drakelings, it's not that hard the speed will easily make up for it, I've finished the game with several drakelings and never faced any serious problems in the ToEF due to the heat. White dragon vaults are definitely more dangerous.

Drakish beastfighters are good because:
1. drakelings start with the swimming skill
2. the ACW is easy due to the high speed
3. Beastfighters don't need weapons
4. The acid spit

A few downsides:
1. White dragon vaults are very dangerous (but a great source of xp if you can handle them)
2. beastfighters start out without literacy and so do drakelings too, so you won't have literacy in the beginning.

Anyway, I find this race/class combo to be one of the easiest in the game, and in the late game, they are real walking tanks

Trolls, although quite deficient in the LE category, can't be discounted when considering brute strength, however.
Only a fool's hope.....

bennywan-kenobi, their 'brute strenght' superiority ends as soon as *any* other char gets his paws on herbs + PoEX.
*Dire* XP penalty keeps haunting poor troll for all his poor thirty years of lifespan (+one hit from Ghost Lord, and bye-bye!)

That Ghost vs. Troll thing comes up every time one talks about Trolls...afaik Orcs have shorter lifespan than Trolls.

Trolls have gemology which should help getting LE up to a decent level once you find some pickaxes...

I still hate them for the XP thing. Some special birth message might help a tiny bit, but they are still the pain.

Weaponsmith can be a decent melee-class after some work.

It would be an improvement if each race had a certain 'modifier' to their stats. Like, Trolls would have (extreme) 1.3 modifier in strength and Toughness, and 0.7 in learning. So a Troll with all stats at 99, would be comparable to a human (base race) with ST and TO of 130, and LE at 70, and never ever getting better LE. A troll with 25 STR would not be so extreme, but function like a human at STR 32

As it is, It would appear that 'weak' races have a tough start, but after a bit are every bit as good as the starting strong races. If I have a char with starting ST of 5, he will soon enough raise it to 16 just by walking around carrying stuff. And then his hardship will be over, and he gets to carry over other benefits as well.

Those Troll modifiers are extreme, most would lie between 0.9-1.1 range. Or something.

Since char created already have some scales in their stats, I think the stats should be ok the way is is now. The real problem in stat scaling in my opinion is the PoGA. Blessed ones, that is. My solution is simple: letting the blessed PoGA increase player's stat based on a scale of some sort. A troll with massive Ma compared to St shall gain 1 in St, guaranteed but no Ma whatsoever or he might get one with ultra-low chance. Once character getting to 50+ stats, their best source of char dev is PoGA. Thus from that point, we shall see some pattern.

Molach, IIRC orcs have a lifespan of 50...
And Morio, about your drakish beastfighter:
"3. Beastfighters don't need weapons"
Oh shit, I found Serpent's Bite in SMC, but aww, I'm a beastfigher, can't wear weapons...
Anything like that ever happened to you?

Things like that happen every time i play a beastfighter. It's darn annoying when you do the dargforge - can't do it without stumbling over something that would make a PC of an other class drool with happiness and anticipation...

Mewto, actually my last drakish beastfighter found serpents bit in a lesser vault somewhere in the CoC (quite late in the game), and yes, that's a bit annoying, but beastfighters deal great amounts of damage without using weapons too. And yes you always find great weapons with beastfighters, but I still like them.

Also, one more good thing about beastfighters: tehy get the ability to switch places with hostile monsters at lvl 32(?)

gnome druids born in the month of the Book. I think they get a lot of xp.
I made a gnome druid in the month of Book, picked the get 2% more xp and +1 to LE, and he needed 133 xp to advance to lv 2(he had only 16 LE).

Then i made a gnome wizard in the month of Raven, picked good learner and great learner + +1LE, and he needed only 111xp.

Then I made a gnome farmer in the month of book with good, great learner and Learned and he needed 112xp! that was a surprise. anyway, just check andy's guide, I'm sure you'll find everything you need...I remember seeing an experience chart or sumthing...

I just made a random gnomish druid (candle birthsing), he has Le:16, and needs 119 xp to advance. It'a a gnome thing, that's why gnomish beastfighters are so good.
