I believe liches are weak against fire so using fire spells on them should help. Arrows of slaying will also help if you found enough of them.

A wand of fireballs can be a lifesaver if you go grave digging and end up digging up the dreaded emperor lich (dug this guardian up in my random game challenge in CoC graveyard as a level 20) oh man what a idiot I was never grave digging again after that. Emperor lich had plenty of time to drain stats and he could death ray at any moment though.

The only fire spell that doesn't burn stuff on the floor is Burning Hands.

Now, the question is: Do you really want to get that close?

And, additionally, do you have death ray resistance?

1. Be sure to fight the liches in a tight space. This will prevent them from summoning help.

2. Be sure to keep good distance between you and them to prevent stat draining.

3. Shoot them to death with arrows/bolts/magic missile (although the emperor will shrug a lot of spells).

4. If all else fails, run, hope they follow you, then kill them one by one with fireballs.

Be sure to be confusion resistant/death ray resistant. A high willpower is a must, otherwise you'll still get confused by the emperor.
You know you've played too much ADOM when you try to throw coins at people wearing similar clothes as yourself.

If you hadn't opened the inner door, you could have worn amulet of perseverance, sword of Nonnak and probably had over 40 willpower. (48 is even better). The ball spells go through the wall, so you can kill them while safely on the other side. Acid ball or Fireball will work. You will burn most good items, leaving adamantium/eternium stuff, but all artifacts will remain.

Helmets/Rings of mental stability or rings of the clear mind is useful too. But in my experience high willpower is just as useful.

Since the inner sanctum is opened, I guess Amulet of death ray resistance is still better than amulet of willpower, but do use the sword of nonnak.

Invisibility is helpful (for the summoned nasties).

I've never cleared out an undead vault myself. I started doing one, but then just gave it up. (Didn't really need anything). D:50 is a lot easier than greater undead vault..:)

Improved fireball with high willpower is king against emperor liches in a valt. just stand on the other side of the inner vault wall and BLAST AWAY.

Where you are farest from the door, that is.
BTW, the only things that worth the time are the artifact, so ignore the stuff burning issue.

The RODS is made of eternium, though. So it won't burn.

Wands of wishing are always eternium, but RoDS are always adamantium, so I think they can melt down but are pretty resistant.

Well there isn't any alloy or metal called adamantium...so it's gotta be something magic.
Probably "adamantium" is just brass + some inherent magic which binds the atoms much more strongly together.
So when you use up the wish, free the djinni, its just plain brass left...
