At the weekend, after a few beers, I decided to have a bit of fun with my new character. I saved the character, created a backup copy, and sent my 14th lvl wizard into teryino with the intent of massacaring the population. The intention was, survive or die, to quit the character when the massacre was over, and resume from the backup.
However does the mere fact that I have created a backup, and allowed the character to die in a parrallel universe mean that I can no longer call it a win if my original character now goes on to finish the game?
I'm hoping that it wont be considered a cheat, as I've got 75 DV, teleportation control, Teleportation spell * 700, Invisible, pre-crowned, lots of offensive spells etc. Its all looking good at the moment.

Erm, I think it's up to you to decide if you cheated or not. It's your concience, not mine. Though I wouldn't consider it cheating, anything in the name of knowledge and progress, right? :)

You didn't gain any unfair advantage so it is not cheating. :)

Nah, you can put it down to your character having a morbid dream of death and destruction :)

Seems alright if you want to stick it in the ADOM HOF.

Phew, relieved about that.
However I did find out that my character isnt tough enough to take on shopkeepers, didnt exactly take it seriously though, just hacked my way through the local population.

If you look at the list of generated artifacts in the copy's final log, or your inventory, you are cheating. If you don't...

You can call it a win, but I would feel a bit guilty for doing something like that. (You should inform about this backup when bragging about it.)

Fortunatly I didnt look at the list of artifacts, unfortunatly while drinking and playing again, my character died. I took him too deep into ID, for experience, and he got hit too hard too quick. Corruption was starting to take its toll anyway.
I must learn to play another game when I've had a couple of drinks. I feel invincible after a beer or two, but those Molachs seem to have a different opinion.

I'm a bit of a purist, so I guess I would call it cheating. Any PC backed up from a save doesn't feel right to me, I don't even back up for power outages or ADoM crashes...sounds a bit stupid, I know, but thats just how I am.

I have to say that after restoring from the backup, I did feel uneasy.
I do now take backups after a crash involving another promising start, but would always feel a bit tainted if I ever needed to use one.

I can forgive myself loading from backups. Just a bit frustrating.

Imo any saving is cheating even if it's just for fun. If ye gona have "fun" be ready to bear the consequences.

Only acceptable saving is using that ingame option when u must for some reason stop playing and will continue later from where u left.

I agree.

"I can forgive myself loading from backups."
Which is good, forgivness is good. Backing up IS cheating.

Mr Biskup says so.

Well, there's nothing wrong with backing up your game. You just can't count it as a real win if you restore from backups after anything but a bug/crash/signal291. I always back up my games; it's just too annoying to lose a good character when the power flickers during a typical Midwest thunderstorm.

In your case, I'd say: No, probably not a cheat. You intended the clone to die all along, after all.

Granted.

"You just can't count it as a real win if you restore from backups after anything but a bug/crash/signal291."

Which this wasn't.

=)

I take a hard line on this, and yes, I have cheated before.
It is tempting to back up just before the casino, especially when playing 50 line games.

Still, cheating is totally fine, IF the person that does it believes so.

it is unconditionally cheating.....
the definition of a "rogue style game"
is play to the death with no saves.
i still own the original 'Rogue' and i have never won the gam legitimately, <after 25 years>
however ADOM is huge, and several saves are considered reasonalble, we all dont have 13 hrs to play games. especially since CIV 4 is out.
but in the purest sence of the game you cheated... experimenting is HOW you die and learn... build a char, and scum him to deth and LEARN but dont submit it to purists like me
just my opinion, you asked...
