Simply put, an island in a river is often created where either a trap or item was generated.

If there isn't any item in the spot, you may be in trouble...

Thankfully I did not die when I found this out :) Still, acid hurts. And losing my broadsword of penetration hurt even more. (I had a backup masterwork mithril scimitar, though.)

Off topic:

zaping a wand of trap creation toward a section where a door is supposed to be will create a closed and trapped door. Dont do it while running away from door-openers though.

More usefull info is that the disarmtrap spell works on doors. just cast it on any door and you can safely kick it open.

if you were speedy enough to get out of the way though, the trap would backfire on the door opener chasing you... :)
