Seems like the only lag I get on this agreed sub-par broadband (DSL), is on this forum. I am in Tampa, FL on Verizon DSL and man this site is slow. Anyone else get this lag? |

You're not the only one. It sometimes takes 5 minutes or so to load the site up :P Ladies and Gentleman, take my advice. Pull down your pants, and slide on the ice. |

It's slow sometimes for me too. Not sure if it's my sub-par 3 years old ASP 3.0 code, the size of MS Access database file (50+ Mb) or just ovarall trafic on this shared server that cause the problems... No doubht converting the database from an Access file to a MS-SQL server might help a little, problem is that between the HoF and the forum I'm already over the 100Mb of database storage this hosting option include, and I think I have to pay extra per 5 Mb over that. With the Access files I'm just using a bit of the (exessive) 3 Gb of file storage I have. I've been working a little on optimizing my old code too, but I think the biggest problem is that this site is not the only one hosted on the same machine. Jan Erik Mydland HoF admin |

Yup, this site is slow for me and always has been. The following is a real Adom message: The homunculus hits you. You suddenly fall asleep! Do you want to continue to read the spellbook of Calm Monster? [y/N] |

This site was never that slow for me...couple seconds per page max (with ADSL)...but now I find that i dont come here that often because of the 1-2 min per page load time. Hope it speeds up soon! -- that is not a shot at you Jan, I really enjoy the forum and community, and I wish you the best in your endevours to speed things up. I can tolerate the wait times at home, but at school, these pages can't even load properly. If I try to open a flg file on this site from my school, it takes minutes to load half a page of plain text, and then never loads any more than that. ime, it's connecting to the server that takes time, once that's done the loading doesn't take long. "I don't know what World War 3 will be fought with, but I know World War 4 with be fought with sticks and stones." - Albert Einstein |

Yes, it's definitely the actual connection that seems to be taking its time resolving, from what I can tell. Once a connection to the server is made it can then be erratic and cut halfway through loading something, but usually it'll load up the page pretty quickly. I work as a performance tester on web sites for a living, and I've done a little analysis on the site. While it is impossible to narrow down the exact cause of the problem without access to the servers, it appears to be database related. If I request a page as a whole, it takes 40 seconds. However if I request only the graphics, its less than 0.5 seconds. Requesting the base url, but no graphics requires 40 seconds again. What this means is that the webserver is working no problem. The issues therefore has to be the application layer, or database. The simple way to test this is to remove half the pages from the site, by that I mean remove half the posts from the database. If this improves response times, you have narrowed the issue down to the database. Then its just a case of deciding how much historical information you want to keep. Hope this helps whoever is maintaining the site |

Yeah, it's almost defenently the database... A ~30Mb MS Access file just doesn't perform very well for dynamic websites :O The current plan is to extract all the FLG data for the characters in the HoF to plain text files, same with the avatar images (image instead of text files obviosly) for forum users, there is no reason to keep those things physicaly in the database, they could prefectly well be stored as files. That will free up sufficient space to let me fit the rest nicely into the mySQL database I have available. MySQL scale a lot better than Access so that should speed things up nicely... Just have to find the time to set up the new database structure, rewrite a bunch of scripts and move the data over to the mySQL server and such. Jan Erik Mydland HoF admin |

Good luck. I share Naiyor's point, perhaps I'd be active if this site would load in perhaps 20-30 secs max. (\_/) (o.0) (> <) ( / \ ) Don't click this http://www.mindistortion.net/iwantyoursoul/?i_am=Darkcutter |
