Hi all! First a few things about me to get you up to speed. I've been playing ADOM off and on for quite a few years. My first win was on version 0.7 or something, with a Trollish Priest. I always play legit, creating a new character after every death and never hex edit my char stats.

I won the 'normal' way with a High Elf priest last year and am now stepping up to try an ultra ending. My current plan is a Dark Elf Priest (as you can see I like priests!) that I hope to do a ToTRR win with. I intend to also collect the complete Chaos trinity, but will still opt for ToTRR.

My current game has mid 90s in 7 stats, with a 49 in perception and a painfully low dexterity. I spend a lot of time in I1->I9 (to avoid corruption) and use exchange potions, and the game time is greater than 1 year. I document stats and have a step by step account of what I've done to get to where I am. I've finished BUGCAV, the forge, pyramid (obviously), fully fed the demented ratling, recovered the chaos piece from the ancient stone circle, covered the gremlin cave and been to the high mountain village, tower of eternal flames, as well as finishing up the library.

I'm currently at "you are not THAT corrupted" with 42 of the game's 47 available spells missing both identify spells, both divine spells (intervention and favor) and one ball spell.

The problem is this: to do this I will need an absolutely incredible number of SoCRs and I've used four already (3 from BUGCAV), all blessed. I have one potion in pack and that's it. I'm back into I1->I9 again and I've noticed that at I9 I seem to get a lot of stuff I never get at I1, even though the corruption is the same (zero). I'm now getting potions of water and this character has 80 days of level 1 and 2 in which I received zero potions of water. Yet on I-9 i get a ton of them.

Two things:
1) Has anyone on version 1.1.1 found a book of Wish (or Divine Intervention) in the infinite dungeon? I sure could use even one wish for my amulet of life saving.

2) Has anyone really mapped out what items appear more often within what areas of the infinite dungeon? Do wands of wonder, books of wish, and SoCR still spawn there in version 1.1.1?

And finally if you have comments about what strategy I should employ to get this done that would be great. I still need to do all the temples after the dying sage, plus the Blup quest, and a visit to I:66. I plan on completely wiping out D:50 instead of trying something cute, then hopefully take it to AD. I have all available good intrinsics and no bad ones, with eth bridge, invis and the much needed 'see invis' for the AD fight. I've emptied every pool I've found except for the bad one in the stone circle and never recevied a wish. I have yet to find a wand of wonder.

What would you try?

Thanks everyone!

Shea> heres a fun thing to do that may help, get yourself a fluffball from the gremlin cave, and find a wand of trap creation, take these items to an area with a higher danger level (i usually do this in DH1 or 2, or the ToTHKings)
Lock all doors into a room, and have a retreat tunnel handy, now create a water trap or two,
(like so)
 ########### GIVE ME TREASURE!
##.....IIII# /
.+.I..III..######
##....^I.I.I.@..#
 #......III######
 ###########
           \(*poppoppoppoppop*)

Dip your fluffball into a potion of water to spawn gremlins (the water traps will keep them coming) now go to your retreat tunnel, and start killing gremlins! :) you can sfetly kill around 3000 of them in melee combat before extremely experienced gremlins start packing a powerful attack, because of the higher 'danger' level, the gremlins drop many nifty items, i often get a ring of the djinn this way, and a couple of times ive managed to get a wand of wishing as well :)
Also gremlings cannot see invisible, so after 3000 dead gremlins, you can go invisible and hit them with magic missle :)
Youll probally find scrolls of chaos resistance and potions of CC as well, so that makes up for the background corruption too :)

I have a few questions Shea:

1. Are you crowned? (if so, what alignment)

2. Have you completed the unicorn quest? (if so, which one and, if the white unicorn, have you used its reward yet?)

3. How many SoCR in total do you have left?

Basically, a lawful ultra ending is the easiest because you don't need to be corrupted at all when you enter the Chaos Plane (which helps a *lot*). Which means you can clear the way to D49, pop up to the surface, have the white unicorn clear you, and then pop back down to D50 and beyond. It is possible to finish an ultra ending without using any SoCR on the Chaos Plan this way.

Assuming you aren't (or can't) complete a lawful ultra ending then I would estimate that you need about 10 blessed SoCR when entering the Chaos Plane (you may be able to do it with less than 10 with some luck and careful planning, but 10 ought to be be your minimum target). I am assuming from your post that you haven't recovered the ToTRR yet, and getting that from the heavily-corrupting scintallating cave will translate into more corruptions. So, if you aren't striving for a lawful ultra ending, then aim for about 15 blessed SoCR from this point onwards (i.e. recovering the ToTRR, wading through D50, and taking on AD). You can "short cut" this process (and save yourself valuable SoCR) by:

1. Not bothering with the blue dragon caves (IMHO, ToTRR is better than Needle and Sting on D50).

2. Not wasting time in the Mana Temple (assuming you haven't completed it already). Just take out Nuurag-Vaarn as quickly as possible from afar, grab the mana orb, and run for it.

3. Using controlled teleportation and blessed scrolls of magic mapping to finish the scintallating caves as quickly as possible.

4. Not clearing D50 - just get to the portal as quickly as possible, ensure you are properly equipped, and jump in.

I would second Chaos Muffin's gremlin bomb strategy for scumming valuable items. However, the DH may be too risky if you are already significantly corrupted and are low on corruption removal. If that is the case, then rather try gremlin bombing on a less corruptive (but still dangerous level).

I wouldn't bother with the AoLS. If you play well you shouldn't need it and that amulet slot is better used for other items. Moreover, AoLS are *rare* (and wishes would be better used on SoCR).

You also never mentioned whether you have recovered the Sceptre of Chaos. If you haven't, I wouldn't bother - you don't need it if you have the ToTRR, and getting it will cost you dearly in corruption.

Thanks for the help thus far!

The gremlin bomb would be a good idea... I need to see if I have the fluff balls I *think* I kept from sweeping the gremlin cave. It will move me a bit more toward grandmastery as well. Has anyone ever tried reading scrolls of peace a level (like DH1) just to see if the drop rate for uber items is about the same? I'm wondering if I could do the DH1/DH2 gremlin bomb after reading a blessed scroll of peace (I have six left and have already used three) and still have the benefit of great drops.

To answer the questions:

1) No I'm not crowned. While normally I would be by now, getting ToTRR means I'll still have to move from C- (my current) back to N- at a minimum I think, then swing back to C- for crowning. I would hate to leave C- after being crowned... so I'm holding off on that a bit. I still need to get the boar's skull, but have the rest of those minus the farmer (I'll have to knock him off later.)
2) I have not done any unicorn quest as I'm only level 28 (I beat the stone circle at level 26, which was a strong showing for this char). I also have not decided between the sheriff or Hot, but went to get both quests early, so I can get an amulet of order or chaos at this point. My guess is I'll turn in the puppy dog and kill Hot to get the order amulet at the same time plus the initial move toward lawful for those two things. I can usually find easy ways to swing back toward chaotic. Maybe go loot the casino. Who doesnt? :)
3) At this time I have zero SoCR left, with essentially no corruption on the character. I do have a potion of cure corruption in my pack.

I knew an L+ would be easier to do this with, but I'm really aiming to do this as a big challenge :) A final exam, if you will. I still plan on collecting the whole chaos trinity just to have as much of the game "done" as possible when the game is finally over. I figured the scepter would be the worst piece, but I think I can have a huge stack of magic mapping scrolls to expedite my journey to and from I:66.

The only reason I need the AoLS is to give it to Kelevaster so I can get six more SoCR and have him give me the TotRR later. At any rate, you can imagine that this last fight is going to be a doozy, because I'm probably in a position where I'll have to spend a few turns reading SoCR during the most difficult fight in the game just to get through the fight.

Thanks! These are great ideas! I wonder if I can get lucky on DH1 or DH2 by dipping 40 rings of something into a blessed potion of exchange. I'm collecting rings now... I have a ton of them. Wouldn't it be trippy to get 40 Djinni Summoning rings? Right. That's going to happen. *not*

Anyway, at this rate, I'm glad elves live hundreds of years because this win is going to take a long time to set up.

Since I've never successfully cast with wish spell, I need to know - can I keep casting it? I have a learning score that is sky-high, so I should be able to get over 1000, maybe more. As long as the mana it costs does not increase exponentially for each cast (in other words, "as long as it behaves like every other spell in the game") I should be okay.

Any additional comments welcome, of course!

Me again :)
Dipping rings into PoExchange: i think you can only dip 19 rings into the potion, but 19 rings of djinn kick ass! i usually do this trick in the smc, although ive heard that there are better places to do it

Chaos Scepter: if your really worried about corruption while bringing it back from the ID, drop it at the stairs, find the up-stairs, then pick it up again and teleport back to the up-stairs, and repeat till done. This is tedious and not much fun, and carries the risk of going numb in the mind. which will cause you to forget to pick up the scepter and have it lost to infinity while you kick yourself and cry.

Scrolls of peace: i think these just lower the corruption rate of the level, so monster gen and items should be the same.

Wish spell: while i play mainly melee characters, ive read a bit about this spell, and it seems to me to be a big waste. by the time you can cast it, your already a match for anything in the game, as well as its draining effect while casting. But then again, if your trying to become an uber-hero then yay! go for it :)

And i hope to see your Dark Elf Priest (name?) in the hall of fame too.

From what I know about scrolls of peace, they change the danger level, so lowering the corruption of the level *will* also lower the quality of items you get.

You can't get potions of water on ID: 1 or 2. My memory tells me that potions of water need a danger level of 2 or higher to be generated, and that danger level progresses slower in the ID, so that the first few levels of ID are all danger level 1. Stay around 9 if you want water.

I wouldn't scum gremlins in the DH. Yes, eternium and other high level items are generated very often there, but the corruption is just too high. My favorite place to go gremlin scumming is the dwarven graveyard surface level. It's corruption free, yet eternium and both wish items can be generated there. The trick is making a trap on a grass square. To do this, dig a pit, and then 'U'se any blanket while standing on it.

gremlin skumming sucks in my opinion because its just so skummy. But if you are gonna use it let a companion kill the gremlins because if you dont kill them yourself the gremlins wont become stronger so you can keep doing it forever until you find what you want. I think the best level for gremlin skumming is D8 because its corrution free and djinni ringss are possible there. I think its also the best place for exchaning rings.

about the id: I think spellbooks of wish are possible everywhere but they are too rare to find when you look for them. I always go into the id until I find a djinni ring or amulet of life saving and I mostly find one of them eventually. In my current game I found an amulet of life saving on id level 32, but I find djinni rings more often.
