i have a gray elven druid that's doing pretty good:
- some nice spells under my belt (but no strength of atlas yet)
- snake from beyond killed
- steel zombies from darkforge killed (havent worked up the courage to tackle kherab yet though)
and now i'm stuck at the toef.

i didnt even try going in yet. i have a few fireproof blankets, but no rings of ice yet. i do have resistance to fire and over 100 blessed spenseweeds, as well as wands of digging, the digging spell and nether bolt (as well as a power 22 lightning bolt). i have teleport but lost teleport control when draining pools (lost permanent invisibility too, but i have a blessed ring of invisibility to solve that).

i really have no idea what to do next. the minotaur maze and bug temple are out of bounds, i cant find the down stairs in the VDDL, and i cleared the gremlin cave already, as well as all the dwarf quests. i've gone as far down the CoC as possible without the fire orb. there *is* a ring shop on the first floor of CoC, but the shopkeeper is a mean troll who charges ridiculously high (and he's restocked several times already, but i dont have any use for those rings) so i'd need a lot of cash to have a small chance of getting some rings of ice... and i dont think that'll happen.

so, any suggestions? :P

What kind of weapons/armor do you have (what metals are they made of)?

You could always try scumming the ID

I assume you've done the high kings dungeon as well? Personally I'd say do the tower without rings of ice - just wear equipment that won't burn. You'll be relying on spells mostly anyway, so it may be an idea to wear two high metal shields. Remember that any rings you have under the elemental gauntlets will be protected from the heat. Wands of acid and any ball spells would be handy for when it comes to taking down the wyrm. What are your stats like?

And if youre feeling skittish you could always enter the tower and see how you fare. Clear a path to the top level. Dig thru walls. Kill some servants for exp. I presume you got ice bolt spell trained nicely.

Only danger to you is dying from the Wyrm's attacks. Obviously. If you stand on distance (using bolt spell) wyrm will hit you with energy ray spell, which might do some serious damage, 200-like. You got dodge which helps avoiding, but alertness is a lot better (you cant get this unless from ?oEducation.

If your DV is good you could try standing next to him (two shields, sure) on very coward and ball him to death.

Basically you need enough HPs to survive, you should be able to kill him easy enough. You can rely on Extra/Ultra healing potions as well as the water orb for healing. Spenseweed is too slow against wyrm. If you wear elemental gauntlets you can (U)se the orb about 5 times for each corruption, this is not much considering that wyrm will probably be the toughest fight you will ever face.

Other small things to help ya - wands of poison, you zap, he starts dying. Wand of paralyzation - zap he is helpless. Wand/spell of Web - can trap him 1-2 turns. (have to let him walk into webs, it will (never?) stick directly on him.

If you got dragons slaying ammo of some sort, you could (if that missile skill is trained) make use of that. Yes ammo and crossbow/bow will burn, so dont use your best. But again, you will probably find more !dragon ammo later and this is when you might need it most.

So well anyway, all you need is 250+ hitpoints and you can survive. Somehow.

i did the high king tombs too, was a piece of cake with invisibility (cavernous levels) and my mace purifier. so was the dwarven graveyard :P

i got an eternium large shield and that mace, as well as the mummy wrapping and elemental gauntlets. it's my seven league boots i'm worried of (i have 3 of them, but i stashed one away in the barbarian glade). i guess i'll just unequip it, along with my bow and arrows (i do have a fair amount of dragon slaying ammo, i'd say 10-15 arrows) and spenseweed.

i guess i'll work on nether bolt some more then give it a shot. my stats are all over 23 (except for charisma and appearance) and mana 32. willpower is not high enough to make ball spells bigger yet, but i only have improved fireball (not much use :P), and my hp is just over 250 if i remember right.

the only problem is that i scummed the ID a bit and got the mana battery corruption in the process, so i cant use wands unless i use the only !of cure corruption i have. but i have the web and stun spells.

You could do the Rift first, too. Should net you some more spells, as well as some ?oCR.

Willpower you can boost to 27-28 (Do it! get over 25 by making yourself sick and then eat more morgia (You can make yourself healthy again right after eating, dont have to wait for the increase))
You then put water orb in tool slot: +10
Then you wield the purifier: +4

Should give you over 40 willpower and bigger ball spells, besides willpower does help against confusion attacks too.

You dont need to have anything "useful" like spenseweed or pickaxe in tool slot, it takes just as much game-time to (U)se and select item from inventory. It just is faster in real-time.

success :)

i equipped only the stuff that wouldnt burn and went for it (took my 7 league boots off once i got into the tower). with invisibility, the first three levels were dead easy (it was annoying to have to go through a lot of worms without killing them though), on the last level i could dig right from next the stairs to the SW corner of the fire temple, frost bolted all the creatures in the way then ran back to the stairs and cast web. the wyrm came for me but never got near (1 step away was the closest, and it scared the poop out of me :P), and i threw a potion of sickness (does that work?) as well as two of poison (had 4, two burned as soon as i equipped) then lightning bolted away. it wasnt working very well, so i equipped some dragon slaying ammo and that worked wonders. i only lost two arrows too :) oh, and spenseweed worked just fine, the webs kept the big bad wyrm away.

then i frost bolted somemore into the temple to get more xp and left.

i'm now in the casino with a new ring of djinn summoning (got it from a vault of elves. those dark elven wizards were a pain, but i love invisibility :-D).

btw, anyone knows what happens if you damage too many goods in a shop (picking up wands or potions or food with the appropriate corruptions) and cant afford to pay back the damage? do you have to fight it out? i picked up 5-6 wands before i remembered i had the mana battery corruption, but i had enough cash for it.

oh, molach, i also started working on my Dx, To and Wi some more, thanks for the tip! it wasnt gonna be useful in the toef though, the only ball spell i had was improved fireball, hehe.

oh, and sorry if my posts seem long, but i dont get this far very often and i dont usually have such an easy time taking down some of the tougher monsters (the wyrm, snake from beyond, and even clearing the dwarven graveyard...), so i'm kinda ecstatic at the moment :-D

Heh, we all know that feeling, Taz. What's the furthest you've gotten? You've probably done the hardest challenges for a long while now, you just have to be careful about silly mistakes - there's a lot you can make! Be careful with the Banshee, be extra careful with weight if relying on girdle or greed or Strength of Atlas, and if you've killed any kitties prepare to shit yourself when up against the master cat. Don't get overconfident and decide to try out the water dragon or the bug temple. (the are all the dumb mistakes I usually make)

i'm stay clear of the water dragon until i have some form of water breathing equipment (then i'll think whether or not the xp is worth the risk :P) and i cant go into the bug temple. but i've killed the banshee and i'm making a beeline for the cat lord, gotta love being a druid :P

i've actually beaten the game once with a wizard (gnome, i think), but it was with backing up and reloading every time i died. i did die once with this character but it was on purpose (see how fast i died against a highly experienced acid vortex in the smc. the answer is very very fast, faster than i could blink) and i had it backed up too. now i'm playing it properly and treading very very lightly since this is the furthest i've gotten without reloading.

Congrats, I hope you make it this time.

And yes, if you can't afford the stuff you you damage, you'll have to fight your way out.

if you haven't already cleared out the air temple, remember to be quick once the master summoner notices you, since a heap of great karmic wyrms doesn't make it any easier. And also, once again a good strategy for the earth temple is to lead out the grues/elementals one by one

i made it, i closed the gate :)

this character died once in the smc when i was trying out something stupid though (i knew i was gonna die so i backed up :P), but i'll still count this one as my first win without reloading.

and i had no idea that balors gave so much experience. i ran out of things to do at level 38 so i just decided to go down and see how i did. there wasnt anything else interesting to do.

Yeah, balors give a lot of xp. Did you clear out the whole D:50?

i only killed what i needed to get in and out (all balors, chaos wizards, ghost lords, as well as whatever was in the way. that includes a whole lot of writing mass of chaos). i created to doors to close off those two little rooms with teal-colored C's (i forget what they're called) and locked them. used up almost all of my demon slaying ammo (as in use them again and again till they're almost all spent) :P

Any chance you'll put him in the Hall of Fame? Yeah, balors give loads of exp, my barbarian gained levels 44-46 off Fisty alone.

i did die once, so i assume it wont be qualified to be in the HoF? i havent left the chain yet, just roaming around doing stuff (tried going into the minotaur maze, then remembered the max level limit) but i think i'm out of things to do.
