Jan, where are you? It seems that recently there has been at least one spam post a day in the ADOM forum, usually pornographic. I sent you an email mentioning a couple of repeat offenders but you never replied.

Sorry about that, I did read the mails. Just not sure what I can do about it :(

The IP's used are from all over the place (New York, Madrid and Bangkok so far). Seems unlikely to "just" be a disruptive vandal, most likely a bot net of some kind. Forum spam seems to be a growing trend unfortunately. May have to look into making some sort of spam filter if this become a constant problem.

There were three more from 203.113.13.* today, which I have now deleted. Should I be reporting them all in detail to you?

Are they all the same, or different each time?

If you could e-mail me a couple of examples the next time they pop up I could try to put up some countermeasures if they follow a predictable pattern.

And thanks for keeping things clean, I know I haven't been too active around here lately...

Email sent - could you let me know whether you received it? Since I had to include the spams I'm a bit worried that your spam filter could mistake it for spam itself.

While I am happy to continue helping to moderate these forums, please be aware of the following:

  • Right now, I am dreadfully busy at work, and hence am not getting on the forums as often as I would like.
  • The week after next, I am on holiday, so my Internet access may be somewhat erratic.
  • In particular, on Monday 25 September I shall not get online until the evening because I am visiting my grandparents.

I hope that Jan and Iridia can take up the slack during this unavoidable busy time.

maybe this forum is in some list that spammers from all over refer to :(

Yeah got it. I don't trust any content based spamfilters (ironic since I probably have to make one for the forum), I use origin blacklists instead (works great) pluss everyone I've exchanged mail with at least once is on my whitelist so even if your ISP get blacklisted for hosting too many spammers your mail should still arive safely.

I'll see if I can find some time to do something with this over the weekend, kinda busy with work and stuff too myself.

This is an advance warning that in November, I shall be playing in a Nethack tournament ( http://nethack.devnull.net/ ). Because of this, I may not be able to get on the forums, certainly not every day. Although the spam problem has lessened, there is still some (I deleted two this morning), and you may want to find another moderator while I am away.

Well, I guess I could take over for a month. I know I'm kind of out of the loop when it comes to this forum, but I know spam when I see it :P

Actually I've already deleted two spam posts.

I have a suggestion:

a) some way to prevent spambots to post. Posting without registering is the problem AFAIK. Although they seem to be able to post even after that sometimes.

b) some new moderator. Although the forum (seems) to be really cool, no fights between people (or it gets edited before I see). The spam is the only problem.

Since a would be preventive, and moderators aren't needed for much else than deleting spam, I think that non-regged shouldn't be able to post. At least I can't figure many good sides on it (except sometime's it's nice when you're too lazy to log in :P)

I come here every day--and the spam is posted every day.

If you see spam more than a day old, then you can blame it on me... otherwise--well, I do have a day job, you know.

Yeah, I came on one night and there was three. It would still be bad if you had to register. That would mean they'd spend around thirty seconds making an account. I would say, get a spam blocker. If it has words like "porn","buy", or anything of that nature it would be sent to a moderator. If it was about things related to ADOM, it would be posted. That would be a strain on the moderators, so it might not be a good idea. Otherwise some spam filter would work.

It wouldn't really be a strain on the moderators, since they have to read and delete the posts anyway. I would have thought a filter like that make actually make it easier? Another thing to filter out is loks of successful links and attempts at html tags. Not sure how easily it could be implemented on whatever forum system Jan is running though.

Yeah spam filter would be good. Problem is the forum system is 100% home grown, so I'll have to program it myself.

That said I've analyzed a few dozen of these spam posts and unless this spam bot is adaptive I think I have figured out an effective way to block it without any coladeral dammage. Just uploaded it, let me know if you notice any difference.

Just a quick question: Have there been any in-thread posts of this kind too? I've only seen the new thread kind myself, but I vaguely remember Ekaterin mentioning some spam beeing posted in existing threads too when this first started...

Yes, there have been such posts. I've only seen and deleted one, but there might be more.

Well, something seems to be working. I didn't have to delete anything at all today.
