Monsters at the lower levels of COC are often described as somewhat experienced, very experienced etc. Now this experience is gained by killing other monsters etc. How does a vortex gain experience? It is the adom equivalent of a suicide bomber. One kill, and its dead too. An utterly irrelevent point, but having had a very promising character killed by on recently, its bugging me. Maybe they do side quests while waiting for adventurers to come along. Rescue puppies etc. Also has anyone ever seen one attack another monster? |

Can't remember seeing a vortex attacking another monster, but no doubt it happens. If another monster in the vicinity has triggered an alarm trap then surely any vortex in the vicinity would attack it. Thinking of that, it would offer an interesting possibility: -Threat room of extremely experienced vortices just opened up somewhere, possibly in deep ID. None has exploded yet on the PC. -Turn invisible and create an alarm trap near the entrance, then teleport away. -Wait for the vortices to start exploding on each other Edit: monsters also get more experienced as you kill them and also in places with high danger level. Ok, there's this vortex named Bob. Bob wants to be a big bad adventurer with his friend, Bobo. So, they go someplace. Bobo sees a goblin and explodes and kills it. Bob, sees how his friend could've improved, and realizes if he explodes on the stomach of a guy, it dies faster. Or, if a vortex is bigger (or more exped) it does more damage. I've seen vortexes explode on other creatures - quite annoying when you wanted to kill it before it exploded and it damages lots of your equipment. As for "experienced" vortexes, that's just ADOM's term for more powerful. Vortices are constructs, just like golems and steel zombies etc. So more powerful version depend on how powerful they were created. They can never get more powerful than that. Waldenbrook, the dwarven shopkeeper, mumbles: "I'd offer 9 gold pieces for yer dwarven child corpse." |

Vortices... I had promising human assassin in big room, and a dark sage summoned around 8 of the lightning ones. I didnt get away. And ive had a named vortice on the bottom of the Pc... interesting. *<< Words go here >>* |

lol, I had a good monk with good skills almost all maxed out. Fire vortex came and sent him to -100 You drink from the bloody pool. You suddenly turn into a dark elf! You hear a booming voice "HOW DARE YOU CHANGE ALIGNMENTS!" A lightning bolt strikes you dead. |
