I was just showing ADOM to my dad. He doesn't know the first thing about RPGs, but he's into computers as much as I am, so I thought he would find the "December 24th bonus" interesting. I explained to him how it reads the date from the computer's clock, and how you can cheat by setting the clock to Dec 24 or July 2. Unfortunately, I explained all this to him while in the inventory screen, which resulted in a rather awkward situation: "Your character wears a girdle?" (Anyone read 8-bit theatre? "For +3 endurance, I'd wear my own underwear over my armor." -Red Mage, explaining why he wears a girdle.) -Amanda Sedai, a save-scumming newbie. (Hey, at least I saved that little girl's dog. Gimme some credit... ;-)) |

Err..umm...can't claim surety on this, but I was sorta under the impression that a girdle was a type of wide belt rather than some sort of undergarment. |

I remember the first time I wore a cursed girdle. I got the message that said I couldn't remove my armor because of the girdle being over it, and thought "I know trolls are stupid, but this can't be telling me I've been wearing my underwear over my clothes and didn't even realize it!" -Amanda Sedai, a save-scumming newbie. Ok, ok. From The American Heritage Illustrated Encyclopedic Dictionary: (pub. in Boston, Massachusetts 1987, by Houghton Mifflin Company) "1.a. A belt, sash, or the like, worn at the waist. b. A band or structure that encircles like a belt." The other versions/usages you refer to are more modernized slang I suspect. At any rate, in ADOM and every other frpg I've ever heard of, the term girdle refers to a belt-type device and NOT an undergarment of any sort. Uh, that would be uncomfortable... I still think girdles are sometimes considered a type of underwear. I remember when I was in Italy a couple of years ago, I saw a store that was selling girdles that were supposed to make you look thinner. It was so funny, because there were "before and after" maniquins and the "after" maniquin was not only thinner but taller! Whoever built it thought that if you press your stomache in the fat makes you taller. I don't know if they were calling it a girdle, because I don't speak Italian, but still it was a belt that was meant to be worn under clothing. -Amanda Sedai, a save-scumming newbie. Isn't those "squeese your waist in" things called girder-belts (sp?)? They are quite simmilar to girldes, in that they are worn around the lower torso, but while a girder belt is used to make you look slimer, a girdle is meant to offer protection for your kidneys and other soft waist regions (makes it harder to knock the wind out of you and such). I think I've seen amatur boxers wear girdles (of some kind)... Jan Erik Mydland HoF admin |
