what are the stats for sting and needle when used together? i want to get em both if they are indeed very good (using mace of destruction now). are the stats for each doubled or tripled (or more)? in the ADOM guidebook they say they are the most powerful wpns in the game in terms of to hit and damage - are they better then the TotRR??

Haven't tried TotRR but my first 1.0.0 winner (Gnomish elementalist with insane stats, posted in google ADOM newsgroup) was using the combo and just about marched over anything he met (except for DK's but they were easily dispatched with Acid Ball). Diamond golems, molochs, steel golems, everything just dropped like flies. You can check the stats from the posting.

The stats of the daggers are un-changed, however when you wield them both you get a huge dammage bonus (more than 100 IIRC) on top of the regular dammage rolls.

So as long as you hit something each dagger will deal over 100 dammage no matter how crappy dammage rolls the RNG throw at you. Not much can stand against an experienced character with those babies...

You can probably find the exact stats, on some spoiler sidte, or if you digg around in the winners section of the HOF...

Also the damage increases with high weapon skills in daggers, high strength and dex, and having the backstabbing and two weapon combat skills (and indirectly with courage and stealth).

They only have problems with greater/emperor molochs. They'll easily kill anything else.

As for the question if they're better then the ToRR -
Yes, they do enormously more raw damage then the ToRR.

No, the ToRR gives you immunity to every element, see invisable and resistance to death. The Ma+24, by the time you've obtained it is useless generally. The damage is nice, and it has undead and demon slaying abilities (balors/molochs/ghost lords are slayable, brilliant for D:50).

There is a balance here, if you're highly skilled in either polearms or daggers, wield which is better. If you're taking down D:50 (and/or going for an ultra ending) wield the ToRR, or the rune-covered trident if you don't have that. Slaying makes that place easy.
Either way, if you have both the twins and the ToRR, carry them both. You'll be able to take down virtually anything (apart from Andor Drakon, he's hard to kill with the ToRR - not enough damage, and you can't kill him without wielding it, and live.)

I agree with Dougy.
But a really unsung weapon is the axe of the minotaur weapon.Though its really heavy it deals massive amounts of damage and easier to get that the TotRR(unless youre going for an ultra ending). You see the rune covered trident very rarley in normal gaves unless your starsign is raven.
So the only other alternative is Sting n Needle n the axe.

Yeah, the axe of the minotaur emperor was harder to get(not harder than TotRR) in g16 but now you can go to Bug Town and get wand of teleportation and 24 scrolls of magic mapping. I had the axe with Trollish Barbarian and he dealt something like die-roll+160-170 damage. And if you fight with one weapon, you can almost hit two times faster(because it costs less energy of course). Twins, TotRR and Axe are all great and they all deal lot of damage.

Some stats for twin-daggers(from Hall of Fame):

(Berserk)
Right hand: +236 bonus to hit, 3d4+112 damage
Left hand: +235 bonus to hit, 3d4+112 damage

Right hand: +185 bonus to hit, 3d4+70 damage
Left hand: +183 bonus to hit, 3d4+70 damage

Right hand: +172 bonus to hit, 3d4+69 damage
Left hand: +170 bonus to hit, 3d4+69 damage

Right hand: +170 bonus to hit, 3d4+93 damage
Left hand: +169 bonus to hit, 3d4+93 damage

Thanks everyone. I've been surfing these borads for a few days now, and soon after I asked about S+N I got em and beat the game. I'm a scum saver though (saved 317 times, hehe!), but it was my first victory, so I have a feeling you'll all let that one go :)

I didn't really need the TotRR for its resistances, because I scum-saved at a pool and using the ADOM guidebook (damn, that thing rOxxOrs!) I was able to get every resistance in the game (cept conf, DAMMIT!). I also had several wishes from the pools, so I wished up some eternium plate, an eternium tower shield, a mace of destruction, an AoLS, several SoCR, a ring of elemental mastery, and some CoK's.

I know it sounds lame, but since I have never beat the game, it was awesome running around not having to bother with rust monsters, water traps, or any other annoying random thing that spawns and destroys your really good low lvl stuff. I also though I was original when I killed off the bug temple and ate all the corpses, soaring my dex to 99 :P Yes, I was the basic human fighter :) I don't enjoy having to deal with trying to get spells with a wizard, and I always run around without looking much at my screen (thus rolling through some monsters, or getting killed in the blink of an eye).

Major problems I had (until my last game, when I even used the questions at the beginning to my advantage - aka I did the starsign and questions (using ADOM guidebook, or course!) until I got a great beginning char) were SUPER annoying things like keeping decent equipment in good condition, getting enough food to feed myself, getting overly corrupted by the bad corruptions, and generally trying to figure out where the hell I was supposed to be going.

Overall, its a GREAT game, and if someone could put some REALLY quality graphics behind it (graphical NETHACK sUxxOrs) it would be the perfect game. Perhaps add more 'side' quests, I always love those. I'm an anti FF fan, and I like to be able to go wherever i want whenever I want, with only the danger lvl of monster stopping me.

The graphics (of course) dont matter AT ALL in such a good, in-depth game such as this, but I am a fan of trying to find the perfect RPG game, and if this game were done correctly by a big time corporation, like Square (even though FF games SUX - too easy!) it would be perfect. Maybe Origin (Ultima games) or another company like them (add graphics without turning it into some lamer japanese anime crap like all the new games seem to do - graphics are NOT the end all be all of rpgs!!!).

Annoying things like running into karmics by accident, relying on the RNG for 99.9% of my equipment, and monsters that drain stats (like vampires) need to be tweaked, but EVERYTHING else about the game was GREAT, and I would GLADLY trade those small things for all the great things ADOM has come up with.

Perhaps less randomness with shops would be nice - it would be great to be able to go to an 'armor' shop, or a 'weapon' shop, similar to the randomly generated ones, but with less devation in the quality of equipment. I dont think its much to ask to be able to buy a plain bottle of water when I want is it?

Also, the whole 'cursing' thing is annoying until you can find an altar to drop your stuff on to check it first (DT is just too far away for a newbie like me to go to first, I do all the quests on the right side of the map before proceeding down into the CoC for the first time). How about a temple in the beginning town, like in DT?

Expanding the NPC interaction would be nice, and adding shops and temples like this would be nice. Also, more shortcuts (like the one in Darkforge, couldn't live without it!) to the depths of the deeper dungeons would be nice (sorry, I HATE walking up and down 20 lvls of already mapped dungeons :P).

Overall, this has to be one of the best games I have ever played, but it just wasn't long enough I guess. If TB could come up with a similar game, but WAYYYYYY bigger, it would ROCK. I'm REALLY looking forward to JADE, even though i'm sure it will be a LONG time until that comes out!!!

And less reliance on randomly generated stuff/luck, please!!!

Congrats on your victory. One great thing about the game is that it has tons of replay value. You can now try for a different ending and/or with a totally different char.

But I have some arguments on a few of your points. You say that FF is too easy, and sucks, and you want to be able to go where you want to, with only the dangerous monsters stopping you. So your perfect RPG would be basically ADOM with great graphics and nothing "annoying" such as monsters you have to watch out for (carmics, cats), equipment destruction by acid traps, rusting, jellies, burning, etc.

And your game would have shops for items? So you could just scum some more with the casino machines winning 200 million gold and buying eternium tower shields and 7LBs and AoLS and !oGA?
Oh and ?oCR, of course. No need to worry 'bout corruptions, who needs them? They're annoying, if nothing else.

Maybe instead of putting a guaranteed altar in Terinyo, for example, you could just get rid of cursed items, so you could just wear everything you find. Also the bad herbs could be taken away so you could eat everything and it wouldn't ruin you.

What makes ADOM such a great game is the fact that there are other things to worry about besides the monsters. After all, that's why some chars/classes are better suited to bashing things and some have other advantages, while not being able to take on GM's or EL's or such with their bare fists.

Thoth: Nope, you can't get Needle and String untill very late in the game (at at least very deep in the CoC), besides unless you dual wield them you won't get the insane dammage bonus (just the 3d4 bit + the regular strenght, skill and level bonuses), so individualy the daggers are not that great.

Once you get hold of both though... well just see Jedik's post abowe.

The "sting" you get for winning in the arena is an entierly different item (I usualy just trade it in for the skills and extra weapon marks from the gladiator).
