I've played ADOM for years, but never tried to beat it. As in... I rarely do more than beat the Yriggs quest, meddle in some caves, then start a new char. I went to the CoC once or twice for kicks, I think I got perma-invis from a pool and just ran around for a bit. XP So anyways, I want to try getting somewhere in ADOM. I'm thinking Sword-sign Hurthling Farmer for the .95 * .85 = 80.75% XP needed for level increase, plus the starting bonuses for rockthrowing/polearms, plus the sign's weapon and tactics bonuses. I want to level my dog up, too. The idea will be to try to find a source of invisibility, since a hurthling farmer should have no problems with satiation. :) Also, I want to use alchemy to a large extent... healing potions + a poisoned polearm, basically. Anyways, what are some tips? I've spent years playing the game already, so it's not like I want someone to tell me how to play or anything. Just like... where to go and stuff. Also, I've never encountered an artifact before... so what would be a good artifact polearm to look for? Stuff like that. for fast xp hutling mindcrafters are way better. and i would value be born in candle or raven higher than wepon skill discount. good guaranteed polearms are tridents:) both runed or red rooster. don't be married with polearms. skullcrusher early in game or mithril batleaxe of penetration can be game winning stuff. Well, I'd warn you first off, don't expect it to be easy. If you haven't tried stuff like the tower before you'll be in for some nasty surprises. There is a very definitive guide to the game - Andy Williams' Guidebook (google search "adom guidebook" and you'll find it). However, also be warned that it will spoil you a lot, and may take some enjoyment out of the game. General progress of the game is thus: -go to dwarftown, do dwarven quests -go to high kings dungeon, obtain item -go to 5 temples, collect 5 keys There's some hints to these in the Mad Minstrel songs, if you ever listen to them. Other stuff for chaos god endings and the like is optional, and there's a whole range of things you'll encounter on the way (which can be very instantly deadly if you don't know what's coming). When I first started seriously playing I found save-scumming a character through certain areas was a good way of learning the game and geting to grip with the challenges and solutions. There's not really any decent one-handed polearms for the typical spear-shield combo. There's actually very little in the way of guarunteed good weapons in general. I usually make sure all orc scorchers throw crude spears at me early on in the hopes of finding something good. But like Soirana said, if you find a good weapon, whatever type, then use it. Also, one of the major forces later in the game is archery, since it's far more powerful than any other form of attack. Magic is also good for being extremely versatile. You may want to instead try a gnomish or elven archer, wizard or priest (gnomes level faster than hurthlings). Oh, and alchemy is rarely much good, unless you go pyromaniac with it. And your pet dog will be useless fairly quickly. Waldenbrook, the dwarven shopkeeper, mumbles: "I'd offer 9 gold pieces for yer dwarven child corpse." |

>There's not really any decent one-handed polearms >for the typical spear-shield combo. i remember on specific artifact spear. in terms of raw damage it beats sword of sharpness. and i heard some people use this sword. if you want to level quickly, get the cup starsign. Spoiler I am used to Lawful chars (you can sac *almost* anything) so keep that in mind while you read this if you find an altar use it to get to extremely close with live sacs, then pray. This is a problem if you are neutral because you will be cut off from some sacs. It is a good idea to find this altar before the Si level for two reasons: 1. You can only get pre/post-crowned this when your level is 8+3(number of artifacts generated) 2. The Si is an artifact and it is easier to get piety with live sacs at lower levels. doing so at non-extreme alignment is called a pre/post-crown and gets you a (perhaps not-so)random artifact(it always seems to be good like BoW, CoL, Executor, Ironfist etc.). Then so again later at extreme alignment to get crowned which gets you one of five usually not as good artifacts and an immunity and permanent blessing. After you get crowned DO NOT stray from your chosen alignment!! hope that made sense. "If the bread weights that much in the draklor chain, then it's no wonder so many die of starvation. i never got why people tend to do precrowns before si. sure it steels on shot, but i never got enough patience for a four. A root is a flower that disdains fame. Kahlil Gibran(1883-1931) |

When I say I've been playing for years, I mean I've been playing AND reading the Guidebook for years. In fact, for the past few days I've been reading the Improved Guidebook from beginning to end-- flaming may ensue, I guess, but whatever. I know farmers suck, but my heart is steeled on hurthling farmer. The dog is actually a shitty idea, yeah... I'll scrap that. As for pre-crowning, I've never liked bothering with piety that much... if I find altars, I sacrifice all the loot I was going to sell otherwise, and do some live sacs, but crowning seems tedious. I'll maybe try for a precrown just for the artifact, though. Anyways, I started a char earlier today, and something happened which I've never experienced before. I took the Yriggs quest for the Healing... found two shields, one quite good, so he never even got a hit in... got him to Jharod, blah de blah. Then I went back to VD:7 to look for some decent gear, because I needed a better melee weapon/armour. So I start looking around... and I get attacked by something INVISIBLE, which punches through my armour and hits me multiple times. I'd worked the questionnaire at the beginning for lots of To (22), and was dual wielding shields, and I still got RAPED. What the heck is it that can spawn on VD:7 which is invisible, with multiple attacks and/or good speed, and great melee stats?! I was really pissed. :P Anyways, I think I need a better supply of rocks to begin with (I ran out right about when I met Yriggs), so maybe I'll farm the Puppy Cave level 2 next time. I just need ant repellant of some kind... Zoop de Whoop |

Ogre magi? They will launch ice at you so you should know what they are. possibly invisible stalkers, but I have never had those unless I could see invisible and then they are pushovers. If it was an ogre magi, it decided never to use magic... Not that it needed to. Also, that character had rolled Smithing, and then I found a leather apron in the VD right off the bat. :'( Zoop de Whoop [Edited 1 time, last edit on 2/1/2007 at 05:46 (GMT -5) by mooseproduce] |

VD:7 is a pretty tough level, actually. Twice as dangerous as level VD:6. So just get the carpenter and get out till you can handle it... Both ogre magi and stalkers can appear there naturally. magi got multiple attack, normal stalkers don't, I think [Edited 1 time, last edit on 2/6/2007 at 07:54 (GMT -5) by Molach] |

You know how normal monsters can sometimes be generated invisible?(Dark orcs, goblins, rats etc.) I wonder if invisible stalkers can be generated visible. "You try to give Fang, the large dog the bone. Fang, the large dog says,"Do you know who I am, mortal?!?!" My smartest dog ever:D |

Er, normal monsters are never generated invisible. However, sometimes they'll pick up potions of invisibility and drink them, making them invisible. But hmm, an invisible stalker drinking a potion of visibility... that'd be interesting :) Waldenbrook, the dwarven shopkeeper, mumbles: "I'd offer 9 gold pieces for yer dwarven child corpse." |

I do think "not removing their innate advantage over all foes" is part of the job description for invisible stalkers, so no. ;) |

Do monsters ever drink potions of exchange, and turn into out-of-depth monsters? :D ...er, I guess they'd just get the stat effect. :P Too bad monsters don't have potion-throwing fights out of LOS. Zoop de Whoop |

Hurthling farmers have natural talent in gardening, and they start the game with herb seeds. This can be very useful if used smartly. You mention: >I'd worked the questionnaire at the >beginning for lots of To (22) There may be a more 'farmerly' way to improve your stats. If you want more info on this, you can look in the spoilers section of the forums. The terinyo quests are a bit hard, considering the low exp. level you are usually at when attempting them. Moloch is right 'VD:7 is a pretty tough level' indeed! I don't consider it spoily, to advise you to spend some time in the ID before taking on areas as dangerous as VD:7. Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! |

Mouseproduce, your best bet is to find a higher metal spear or one with prefix or better yet suffix to boost it's damage. Eternium halberds and tridents arent' that great, but if you help a certain character, you'll eventually be delivered something quite nice. It probably won't reach you before Casino though. The reason you want to bother with piety and precrownings, is that you can be given some artifact weapons of the type you desire (or something else useful), and these can make a huge difference, turning a half-assed character into a juggernaut. The reason it's so tedious is because the rewards are potentially game-winning powerful. Third and fourth pre-crowns test even my large amount of patience, so two, then getting crowned champion is a good compromise. 3 artifacts should be plenty. If you wear more than that, you can end up running out of food, waiting desperately for the ratling traders to restock, eating dozens of fried bats, lol. I think you should end up having your precious dog get killed by some chaos thing... that way your hurthling farmer gets the proper motivation for revenge. FOR FIIIIIIIDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! |
