Aye, fairly active it is. The newsgroup RGRA is somewhat active too, as is the #adom channel on IRCNet. As far as I'm aware there's a fair number of active nethack communities too, but I don't play any roguelikes beyond ADOM so I don't know too much about that.

Unfortunately New Zealand is populated mostly by retards, and my ISP no longer does usenet. I used to be a regular at RGRA a long time ago :(

I don't suppose you know of any good web-based usenet places that are free and actually work?

The only place I really know of is Google Groups, which I've been forced to use these days myself. It's simple enough to use, though I prefer the traditional newsreader style.
