That sounds redundant. Late death...hmmm :P

Anyway. I was wondering if we could list causes for late-game death. Late-game as in post-Casino (Cat Lord etc.). I have a character just did the Air Temple and doesn't want to die (hoping for my first regular win).

1. Paralysis. Actually, this applies to the whole game (I've only died once to a ghoul myself). Watch out for mimics (especially higher varieties) and stone oozes. Paralyzation can work in your favor (like the AKW and Cat Lord. I will probably use)

2. Death ray - make sure you have resistance when something like a Ki-rin pops up (or a Cahos Archmage for that matter).
3. Grues. If you're doomed through some item, don't step in dark places.
4. Corruption - try to stay on top.
5. Crushed by luggage - relying on girdles is a bad idea, as even an annis hag can take you down. Also be careful at altars if relying on a girlde of greed or carrying.
6. Bug temple - it can be nasty, only take it on if you're 100% confident. DV is the important thing, and some decent artifact armour helps.
7. Andor Drakon - the main issue is being able to cause harm to him before you get killed by corruption or stat-draining. Also, I've said this before and I'll say it again, make sure you're wielding the trident when you finally kill him, otherwise you will suffer the most horrible death possible.

11. dopleganger king. my worst memmories -- lich king summoning bunch of dopleganger kings.
12. messing with gates requirements. i do remember geting cursed without noticing it.

14. Tension Rooms of the mixed variety can be quite nasty, yes.

15. Lesser vaults. Mixed vaults, Golem Vaults, dragon vaults. The eternium golem found in some golem vaults can be dangerous. Especially if you can't hurt it :P . Great Wyrms seem to be resistant to paralyzation, aren't vulnerable to fire/cold, AND stat drain so watch out. I wish I could get more slaying ammo (dragon, constructs, and especially demon slaying (for molochs which I can't harm until I get that rune-covered trident)).

16. General overconfidence. Here's an illustration from my experience: "I can melee this floating eye in one turn, so what if there's a great red wyrm over there..."

Did they scream immediately or did you have a turn in which you could have used bewax or potion of deafness.

Boy, I'll remember that next time when I'm robbing graves...if I remember correctly, the banshee(or all banshees) do not scream on the first turn, only on second. For example, when you see the banshee on her level, she doesn't scream immediately even if she can see you, or if she's even moving towards you, she waits a little.

Honestly I'm still not convinced that it's possible.

why not?

after seeing dopleganger kings in dwarven graveyard i'm not so much surprised.

i do have memmories of killing two banshees and second wasn't wished for. i suspect it was random spawn on some cavernous levels in d30+.

Dang, now I'm going to be paranoid of random encounters with banshees...gorgons and banshees are stupid one-attack killers.

Ever since I lost a good gnomish elementalist to being sacced by a kobold when I was level 20(my highest level at the time), I've never played chaotics as much.

Gnomes start N not C! I only play L characters so this gnome will be precrowned lawful as soon as he gets to L alignment with an amulet of order that the sheriff gave me.
