After reading the other thread regarding unicorns, I remembered a horror I had pushed into the back of my memory.

I had a very promising character, a troll healer born in the month of the candle. Good equipment, level twenty something, great stats, spells, had finished the ToEF and gone down to the Casino.

On the level directly below it, what do I have the misfortune to find? A very strange level, like the caverns in the Tomb of the High King. The first thing I see is a Black Unicorn. As I move closer to engage it, I see another one. And another one. "Oh $#!+" So I zap a wand of monster detection (or read a scroll, whatever). "You detect the presence of (twenty some odd) creatures." ALL OF THEM BLACK UNICORNS! The place was swarming with them. IIRC they were teleporting... My character was strong, but not that strong. I had fought single ones before and it took a lot of finagling to prevail (and a few PoEH). I quickly fled up the stairs before being overrun.

So I was wondering, has anyone else run into weird levels like that, you expect it to be a regular level, and then it's a cave full of some creature(s) of a certain type?

I'm not sure what you mean, but I've had ghosts surrounding me from all sides. It's bad because they just walk through walls. Two days ago my trollish assassin got surrounded by ghosts... I didn't get any message to indicate that there was a tension room on the level so I wasn't prepared. Luckily, none of them hit me, but I kept hitting them while on Coward mode. Of course, he died later in Darkforge.

Deep in the CoC it's not uncommon to find random cavern levels. Threat rooms in them can be particularly nasty... Recently I found a threat room of titans deep in the BDC, but thankfully it was a pretty much invincible character.

cavernous levels sometimes have sort of tension rooms. some place stuffed with identical monsters, the worst i ever saw probably was bunch of chaos wizards. bunch of greater earth elements being next.

Chaos wizards can be enough of a pain on D:50, let alone when you're level 30 somethin and have trouble with Diamond/Eternium golems...I personally don't have an issue with these two monsters, magic missiles obliterates them.

I once found a lesser undead vault, an anthole, a tension room with mimic hiveminds (about 20 or so) and a big tension room with diamond golems (about 35-40 or so), all on the same level. That level was kinda nasty.

Hah, just found a corner of a cavern in the UCBT (before the ToHK), filled with shambling mounds. Didn't bother to kill them :p

EDIT: Died 1 min later to the piranhas. Got the king wounded to critical and he confused me... I forgot to Pick Pocket and walked into the water. 3rd promising priest that died in two days, all because of stupid mistakes :/ Oh well, I'd better focus better next time.

You had the same death as my King Moloch, Mewto:(

Why would you be scared of shambling mounds? They're not even that tough.

I know, but I was level 14 with a dark elf. Not very strong, had only 17 St and a flaming adamantium battle axe. He had problems with everything ranging from jackals to baby dragons. There's a huge difference between a troll and a dark elf, nobody could touch my troll assassin. Seriously, I got surrounded by ants at level 7 and they wounded me only when hitting criticals, got surrounded by very experienced bee warriors, they never hit me when on normal tactics settings... I don't remember his DV/PV, but they must have been high. My DE got hit my rats when on Coward :( Shame he died, he had lots of luck with item generation.
A question: how many days have usually passed when you guys reach the CoC? And what caves do you usually visit? I'm worried about time, sometimes I reach the CoC at day 25, but that's when I do the PC, VD/DD and UD.

depends on situation. usually once you got 7LB time stops running. so if you not planing to leave CoC without them, day 40-50 is still fine.

I reach CoC almost always at day 25, since that includes a precrown, puppy cave, and either healing/herbalism and if not those two then I go to HMV. If I'm playing a bard....I could go ID dive into infinity for years and come back later and only a day could have passed.

This brings up an interesting question: if you get really fast in adom, will you turn inside out as einstein once said? Could be interesting....
