I've read some Gemmell books, but I might be confusing him with Eddings when saying that the ones I've read haven't impressed me much.

Looked him up - still nothing. I've got more to do with my time then to read one of the many fantasy writers. ;)
And money doesn't grow on trees. Untill I can get his books for 2$ or less, OR if he's really, really good (Ursula le Guin, David Weber or Terry Goodkind good), I can't afford to buy or read that.

Try Gene Wolfe - the single most talented and mind-blowing American writing sci-fi/fantasy today. I recommend Fifth Head of Cerberus or Book of the New Sun as intros. These are fairly old titles, so they should be available relatively cheap.

Maelstrom: Please tell me you did not just make a literary comparison between Gemmell and Goodkind (let alone, comparing Gemmell unfavorably)

Gemmell is an original, insightful author who brings depth to his characters and authenticity to the worlds he creates. Goodkind is a misogynistic, plagarizing hack who can't even keep a consistent story line within a single book (let alone between sequels)

Making such a literary comparison is like making a political comparison between John F. Kenedy and David Duke!

Ugh, if you read Goodkind, go back and read the original: Robert Jordan.

Yeah, he is.
But he's fun to read and Robert Jordan is plain boring. Stopped caring about all the Wheel of Time characters halfway through the first part.
I usually find the unoriginal writers to be more... fun. Like J. V. Jones' "Book of Words" compared to Tad Williams' "Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn".
I also find J.R.R. Tolkien's LOTR to be a good read for 12-year olds. I did enjoy it the first time, but it introduced me to the concept of fantasy and I was eleven. New worlds are fun, but I read for fun characters and interesting stories.

P.S. I have NO idea who David Duke is... But then again, you'd propably have no idea who Korwin-Mikke is too ;)

. . . I haven't read "Book of Words", but "Memory, Sorrow and Thorn" is, itself, an homage to Lord of the Rings.

I have no problem with covers. The Sword of Shannarra is a wonderful read, even though it is a blatant remake of "Lord of the Rings". My problem with Goodkind is that his remake is really poor writing (IMHO :-) )

Wow, when I was 12, I would not have been able to make it through the entire LotR.

Acctually, I first read it when I was 9, but it took me over 3 months, and I didn't remember much from the first part when I finished Return of the King. Had fun though, since I grew up mostly on Greek mythology and russian fairytales.

I see why you think Goodkind's a poor writer. I like his stories, although they are inconsistant, simple and unimaginative.
I also like j-pop for the same reasons I like his books. Kitch is fun :D
Doesn't stop me from listening to Vivaldi or Luis Armstrong - diffrent styles for diffrent ocasions.

And I will check out Gemmel if I see him anywhere. But I propably won't, since I haven't seen his name anywhere and I get a 10% discount at most of my city's bookstores ;)
