So I start a new game, figgure I'll try a class I never tried before, so I start a farmer. I look at my stuff, see I have a nice weapon (a +3 scythe) and a nice skill set, so I figgure I'll kick some ass. Head to the small cave and step down the stairs into a roomfull of monsters -two orcs, several bats, rats, etc. I think I must be dead, but what the hell, I'll go down swinging. I back into a corner, and much to my surprise, the scythe takes down most things in one swing. My big dog and I take down the whole room full of monsters. Everything is dead... and what do I see in the message window? "The big dog decides to fight to death in a blind rage! The big dog hits you! you die..." Killed by my own dog after taking down a roomfull of monsters. Great...

apparently monsters in a blind rage don't sanely decide who to attack (which means they can attack themselves) but that is a cause of death I haven't heard of.

AND - what kind of IRON RATION weights as much as an iron shield?! A dinner for four, oven included? ;)"

That's a very sad start for a character. I think it's a lesson that pets can't be trusted in any scenario - just ditch them and deal with things yourself.

A very powerful pet can be extremely useful in certain circumstances where exp isn't an issue. Ideal is ancient karmic dragon since they are slow enough to run away from if they turn on you.

Yeah, my first win PC had a Great Karmic Wyrm pet, and it pretty much did all the dirty work for me. Killed all the orb guardians (except the ACW) the hostile Cat Lord, and anything else that tried to touch me. XP really wasn't a problem, but it did turn hostile semi-randomly (it was a heavily-scummed game) in the casino on multiple occasions. I was L+ and it was C. Talk about an odd couple.

Try fending off a hostile and extremely experienced Great Karmic Wyrm that was summoned in the Dwarven Halls. The thing has every bolt spell and invokes mindcraft.

So pets are fickle, most definately. Now I just go it alone, but I never play bards or farmers anyway.

Red, your story reminded me of the movie "Trainspotting", in one of the opening scenes, a man is enjoying a day at the park, laying in the grass with his dog next to him. A person in the bushes with a bb gun shoots the guys dog in the ass, and the dog goes crazy biting his owner.

I think that may have happened to you. Perhaps an errant Kobold arrow from the lil' bastards hiding spot... Dog feels a stinging pain, you're the only one in the room it's aware of. LOL, sorry, that's too frickin funny.
