There is an easy way to check your first kill, although it will only work in future games. As soon as you kill something type &, then type the name of whatever you killed. In the future when you type & it will tell you what your first kill was. If you actually use the & sign to look something up just reset it when your done by typing the name of the first kill back in.

You can name your character after your first kill, too.

There's no way, unfortunately, to find out what your first kill was. The best way to find Filk in that case is probably to have some way to detect monsters and cast it at every level.

Have you chatted with the old barbarian yet?
If not, there is a very good chance to find out
what your first kill was.

(Please know that this is all from my very
distant memory. I havn't done the 'courage
quest in many many years, and a gazillion
things have changed in the versions.)

When you talk to the old barbarian, he first
gives you the quest. Talking to him again
generates one of two messages. One if you haven't
killed a single assigned monster, and the other
if you have.

So go around the dungeons (or Lawenilothehl) and
'experiment kill' some monsters that you think
might be the one. Chat with the barbarian after
each kill, if he stops scolding, you for not
having killed a single assigned monster, that
means you have found your first kill.

If you have chatted with him, but not gotten
the courage skill yet, there is still a small
chance of using the above tactic. If your first
kill was something like a bandit, beggar, outlaw
leader, or some other rare monster, you may not
have killed one yet.

Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong!

Surely it is possible to check the first kill via unholy methods such as ADOM memory or savefile analysis. But don't do that.

I think it's best to pick your first kill well. Something frequent if you plan to go only for Courage, something unique if you plan to go only for Filk, and something hard to find randomly, easy to find when wanted (e.g. large dog) if undecided or if you plan to go for both.

I usually kill a bandit, so I can go for both. Bandits are easily available in Llawenilothel. If you need a late game L-to-C alignment change, beggars could be helpful too.

Assassins are awesome first kills. Can be difficult for some chars at level 1 though.
Waldenbrook, the dwarven shopkeeper, mumbles: "I'd offer 9 gold pieces for yer dwarven child corpse."

well I don't remember what my first kill was and I have been down to level 128 of infinite dungeon. (I am assuming he is in infinite dungeon because of the assasins prince message to search for the lightning filk in the reaches of infinity.) if I killed a rat first than I need to go to level 225. So far every level I have gone down I have looked at the message buffer because I am hoping that there will be a special message when I reACH the level FILK is on. SO far nothing. but I have gone through the monster memory and level 128 is the highest number of killed monsters besides rats. Is there a special message at FILK'S level? and if I leave his level and come back to it will he be there again?

IIRC, there is no message, and, if you leave the level, you will not find Filk again (Adom v1.1.1)

Sometimes you go to the mad ministrel (probably after getting the old barbarians quest), a corpse is generated near his hut. It's your first kill. Attention: It will rot away rather fast.

Maybe someone wants to find out the details, just stumbled upon this recently.

I often noticed this corpse and even saw it generated two times but I had taken the first. But I couldn't make a link with first monster killed because I never quote it.
