There is reasoning behind this (to some extent). For some reason, the human brain cannot proccess "OF". I missed them my first time through too. To find 3 "F"s on your first try is normal. 4 is rare. Guess I'm just plain normal... I've seen similar tests before too, it's uncanny just how much info is "filtered" out before it reach the contions part of our brain. The brain is normaly wired to look at the big picture. Details like the number of letters in a sentence simply don't register unless you concentrate and read letter by letter rather than word by word like we normaly do... Reminds me of a docomentary I saw once. A few percetage of people with a scertain type of brain dammage lack this "filter" who prevent our brain from worrying about every little detail. When a normal person look at a sky scraper all they can remember afterwards is that it was a big building. If asked to draw the building they would be eable to make a deacent likeness, but without any other reference than memory the drawing would be severely lacking in detail. That's because the brain is "normaly" wired to edit away unnesesary details, that is the memory might be very detailed (can be accessed though hypnosis for example), but the contious mind only get a filtered version of it. The person with the brain dammage that lacked this filter was eable to draw the building in every detail, making a exact copy (as far as the drawing skills would allow) of the image of the building from meory, even getting the exact number of windows right without stopping to count or anything. I'd like to see somene repeat that feat. Not many people can glance at for exampel the empire state building, and then proceed to draw it (asuming the drawing skills are sufficient) getting the number of windows right based on just that quick glance. Even if they know how many windows there are they would be hard pressed to put them all in the right place without constantly checking against the original. That test rules, I got 3 like a normal person which is reassuring for me! I even cheated and read it twice and still didn't notice the F's in the OF's and when you pointed them out they just appeared as if by magic. I'm not sure if you've now just removed an important filter from our brains Duke but if I now notice things in a bit more detail from now on I guess it's a good thing. |

I think a but more that that is needed to remove the "filter". I just re-read the text and I could only find 4 F's on the first read though :o It's a bit like searching for ants near an ant hill. you know they are there, but at first you can't see anything. Once you notice the first ant though, your brain will "catch on" and put the ants in along with "usefull data" and all of a sudden you will notice that the ground is crawling with ants as if they had suddenly popped into existance... Once you stop contiously concentrating on seeng the ants it is as if they are almost invisible agian though. Another neat test is those "two in one" pictures, that can look like two completely different things depending on what you focus on (don't have any links handy unfortunately). Cool topic...I only got 3 F's the first time. I never even seen the F's in the "of's." I've also read that the brain (when reading) only needs the letters of the word and not in order...I guess this is also a type of a filter thing. wow, that's cool! :) I wonder how non-English speakers respond to that, though? They'd have different phonics and different ways of recognizing words, but I'd say they'd still be able to read the words. But what about Chinese or other people who use non-phonetic languages? Would they still be able to read the words? If not, how proficient would they have to be with English before they were able to do so? Don't mind me; I'm taking Research Methods! Iridia: it works well in finnish too. yet, if you just switch the places of syllables (or something) it's much easier than when mixing all letters. I got 5 F's but missed the jack in the box one. What about this? Highlight the first line of the spoiler box, then the second, then third, then fourth and so on.
