I have this character going right now, doing very well in basically every way i could want, aside from having her equipment vaporized by a god. I'm kind of confused as to what exactly happened.

she had been N+ for the entire game up until the dwarf town, and once there she had made extensive use of the alter. i noticed after i started to use a helm of leadership that my alignment started going towards lawful crazy fast. i had been doing many quests but they never did manage to change her from N+. I'm quite certain my alignment change wasn't from killing monsters as i had not encountered much undead and i had even killed some lawful creatures to boot.

does anyone know whether the helm of leadership causes alignment change?
it could have been caused by something else as I'm extremely tired and might not be all there.

so annoying. i did not realize my character had gone completely over to lawful, and it was over a very short period of time. i went to id some loot on the alter and suddenly im swarmed with rats. i kill them off and decided to sac small amounts to "safely" realign with the alter. first sac of 10 gold got all my equipment turned to dust...

If i had taken everything off would my "punishment" have been the same or would i have been blasted for damage instead?

Dont know about helm of leadership, dont think it will change the alignment.

I do the following when changing alignments.
1) Drop everything except gold at a safe location like ogre cave.
2) Wear/wield only artifact, even si is good enough
3) Keep saccing 1 gp at the altar till you change alignment. Try 10 if you want, but altar may convert if you are extremely lawful

The punishment wont succeed as artifacts cannot be destroyed and you will get message " ... I cant believe it"

After getting so many characters ruined by the wrath of the gods, I never use non-aligned altars anymore. I'm sure there are safe methods of using such altars but I see no reason to mess with them. When I want to change alignment I can do that safely by equipping an amulet of order or slaying friendly creatures.

i think i made that mistake because of sleep deprivation lol. well im glad to report that despite having my equipment dusted my character is still alive and doing better than when that happened.

I'll keep the 1 gold at a time in mind, i had thought 10 was small enough to avoid converting the alter. hate when that happens, just makes the problem even worse lol.

ps. if you misunderstood me, it was not intentional to change alignment.

Well it seems to me that your problem was that you became "too lawful". In most cases this is not a problem at all. Do you have Music? If yes, tame some rats and then slay them. Another option is to go to Lawenilothehl and kill all the beggars. It's not hard to become chaotic.

well the problem was that it happened extremely fast, fast enough that i didn't notice it.

Well I died just now... was my best character, it was only my second time ever making it to the casino and i ended up all the way past the cat lord on CoC 37. in the neutral combat tactics i had
dv/pv of 80/50. i had nearly every spell and pretty much any artifact worth getting that i had access to. i found a room full of skeleton kings and it took me about 2 real time hours to kill them all with acid ball and while training my shield skill. they kept scattering all over the place which led to the whole floor getting swarmed with skeleton warriors as well. i thought i had taken them all out because i started getting swarmed for the first time by randomly spawned creatures. when i started running out of mana for the 20th time (i had nearly 400 max) i teleported to the down stairs to just move on, but there was one freaking skeleton king left standing on an adjacent tile to the staircase, i thought i would just bring him down a floor and finish it but before i could do anything he got the first hit for a lucky critical, i think he did around 100 damage. too bad, i was melee fighting at times 3 of them simultaneously.

It's always a good idea to be a Coward whenever you're not attacking anything, since there's no downside except for the nonexistent melee penalty and you improve your chance of dodging traps and enemy hits.

hence the "lucky" hit. i had something like 120 dv(on coward) over 80 hp and between 49 and 55 pv. the criticals in this game are insane, even for the pc. you can hit someone ten times and not get through there pv, but then get a critical that takes off like 30-40% of the enemy's health.

it was such an awesome battle tho. id spend about ten minutes going back and forth inside a hallway with guys pouring in from either side, kill them off and then get to one side finally just to have more skeleton kings come into the room at the end of the hallway. after hunting a bunch of em down and taking em on 1 2 or 3 at a time they all started running away from me at half health. they would run into a closed off room 2 at a time and then both would hide at the opposite end and continually spawn skeleton warriors as fast as i could kill them. so i started teleporting around trying to get right beside the kings just to stop the mass spawning, then acid ball the warriors, and as soon as they were gone more kings would flood in from the way i came in. it seems like the kings have a shit tonne of hp because they didnt seem resistant to any of the spells i was using on them, and i had my spells trained up past lvl 20 with over 40 willpower.
