Hydras are rare mid-level foes. Forget the quest for now.
Or endlessly search the Tomb of the High Kings (that's the upper left corner of the map, you'll need a climbing set [180s] to get there).

Another way to get literacy is to eat a (preferebly blessed) dark sage corpse. Those aren't as rare as Hydras.
Or drink a potion of education and hope for the best - they have a DL of 10, so scum the hell out of D:10.

A pessimist sees a dark tunnel.
An optimist sees a light at the end of that tunnel.
A realist sees a train.
And the train driver sees three idiots on the tracks.

I think you can run into Hydras in swamps on the surface too (or are those Swamp-hydras? I forget). Probably not worth the game time spent trekking around up there though.

Those are swamp hydras. Yeah, there is little reason to hunt for a normal hydra, you'll probably find one in a mixed vault later. To ID all of your items at once, you have to get literacy unfortunately - once you have done so (see the dark sage tip above) just use a blessed scroll of identify. Alternatively, if you're a mage, get an AoLS, and save Khelavaster. He'll give you a spellbook of Identify, I think, which can be used to ID each of your items.

Identify spell is equal to uncursed SoI so it gives no information about B/U/C status and is toooo expensive in terms of PP.

But it still gets your items identified; it's just a matter of time.

Identify spell is equal to cursed scroll of identify actually, since it only identifies one item (and uncursed scroll will identify all items of that type). It also costs a lot of PP... Only really useful for wizards and priests, though for them it does handily train the Mana stat quite a bit.
Waldenbrook, the dwarven shopkeeper, mumbles: "I'd offer 9 gold pieces for yer dwarven child corpse."
