Greets, if anyone can answer it would be great.

If adom is coded in C using the Curses library, which only supports 12 color pairs, how is it that adom can use so many colors?

Is it some coding wizardry or is it just that there's never more than 12 colors on the screen at the time and it just seems theres more?

There are 16 colours in curses (though that includes black) and ADOM uses just those 16. Indeed, some like the two cyans and two magentas a very rarely used. ADOM is generally a good example of how to choose colours well without using too much overlap, but without also making everything a mess of too many colours (see Dwarf Fortress).
Waldenbrook, the dwarven shopkeeper, mumbles: "I'd offer 9 gold pieces for yer dwarven child corpse."
